Nothing in the extra settings but I found the log and in it is the following

02-01-2005 14:48:13.23 - Send: ATL#M#DT#########

ATM - Speaker off............. Well well well.

OK, How the hell do I remove this from the initialization string...?????

This site might be of some help.

tried updating the driver but it gave the one I was using originally.... it sounds like you may have stock windows one installed (or an MS one). find make/model of modem and go download the correct driver.

319082 2005-02-01 09:28:00 No I'm using the proprietry driver that came with the modem at install.

Treid the M2 and M1 (separately) in extra settings, no change......

I have 4 different connections set up in dial-up networking and they all have the 'no sound' problem, is there a setting that dial-up has somewhere that I need to revert to open the speaker?

Even when I delete the ISP connection and rebuild it there's still no sound.

Is it the driver that enables the sound?

319083 2005-02-01 09:38:00 Do you have the exact driver for your modem and WinME. More often than not, driver discs will contain drivers for several varients of the modem. A long shot, but worth a look. Murray P (44)
319084 2005-02-02 02:17:00 I've downloaded the driver from the manufacturers website so it should be the right one.

Someone told me last night that shch.exe cannot be fully removed and will remain on the PC causing problems with dialers and dial-up networking. Anyone know of this?

319085 2005-02-02 02:52:00 try uninstalling the modem and reinstalling it.

not to sure with shch.exe but as a general rule some spyware/dailers/malware if broken out of a system it can cause loss of internet use. with winXP its not always an easy fix.

319086 2005-02-02 04:52:00 tried reinstalling the modem and no change.......I'm kinda at a loss now... chriss121 (7035)
319087 2005-02-02 05:41:00 You may have to delete previous registry entries and inf files. What is your modem? PaulD (232)

Problem solved, the only way i could think of, I bought a new modem and installed it. now all is back to normal.....

A huge thanks to all who posted information and replies. I've ended this round with an up to date anti virus, anti adware and spyware and a firewall. So all in all I'vre done pretty well........
