319188 2005-01-30 08:35:00 Safari - thanks, I will try that tomorrow.

Prescott - I actually have a new modem floating around somewhere (bought it for someone else but not sure that they need it - ha ha, they have a similar problem but live way over in the Hutt (my bro in law is only a few streets away). So anyway, I will install the new modem if I really have to.

319189 2005-01-30 10:57:00 Hi Steve,
I dont know if this will help much,
but what about getting to the modems properties through Device Manager and doing a diagnostics on it.
Cheers.

319190 2005-01-31 08:59:00 Problem Solved !

I rang Paradise help desk (duh!) and spoke to the tech guys; took two tries, two different techies. Had to make additions to the modem settings to compensate for a noisy phone line.

319191 2005-01-31 10:01:00 Thats what I said yesterday.
If you had given the name of your modem as requested there are plenty of people here who could have given you the Extra settings to put in.
The usual one that works with many common modem types is +MS=V34
This slows your connection speed to 33k but at least allows you to connect and will still give a reasonable download speed.

You have to appreciate that the computer with the modem problem is not here in my house, where I connect to PF1. Getting the exact type of modem (I remembered it was US Robotics but not any more than that) required me to driver over to my bro in laws house - and it was then that I decided to contact the ISP tech help.

+MS=V34 was not the string that worked. Cannot recall - it was around 20 alphanumeric figures! Also, It took two techies with two different settings before we got the modem to accept the noisy line.

My original question was if the house wiring was the problem. As I can see now, yes, the phone line wiring was the problem, but I needed to put in new settings to the modem to cope with it.

US Robotics can be tricky getting the correct string due to the many types of this modem.
