319178 2005-01-30 05:29:00 Has the dial up connection been set up correctly. I once had a similar problem and it was boxes that shouldn't have been ticked. An example would be the log on to network box. The modem would dial and connect ok and then wait a few seconds and disconnect. Sb0h (3744)
319179 2005-01-30 07:17:00 Can you post the exact error?

Here is the error message:
"Error 678: The computer you are dialling is not answering. Try again later."

To repeat: when I first set up the PC at my bro-in-law's last week, it connected to the Net OK and the download speed was very good.

Yes, this IS the question. Is it set up correctly?

But I did not change anything, from moving the PC from one house to another.

319181 2005-01-30 07:18:00 I would say thats the ISP's error not your problem... Get your isp to do something about it Speedy Gonzales (78)
319182 2005-01-30 07:20:00 the question is "what did you change" ??

if it all worked OK the other day and not it is not working then what has changed since then??

Beat me! This is why I am posting here on PF1. I did not change anything, and wonder if it is the home wiring, that extra old bell in the ceiling, or???

Is there some way to test the modem??

319183 2005-01-30 07:23:00 It might be call waiting put *52, in front of the dialup number.

There is no call waiting.

This afternoon, I still got the error message, but when I tried connecting my wife's new laptop, it DID connect to the net OK. Well, this may not prove anything, after all, the new laptop has a modem that is 5 or 6 years newer and so may handle crappy phone lines better than my old PC.

But recall that I have tried two different ISPs: iHug and Paradise. And both work OK on my wife's new laptop.

319185 2005-01-30 07:27:00 Is there some way that the modem can be tested, before I tell my bro in law that he needs to ring the Telecom service guy?

By the way, we will try snipping the wire to that old bell in the ceiling.

319186 2005-01-30 07:28:00 try a new modem, they are like 15 bucks Prescott (11)
319187 2005-01-30 07:54:00 Error 678 is usually caused by poor quality phone lines and results in your modem and the ISP modem not communicating very well. Adding extra settings to your modem can cure the problem.
What you use depends on the modem type and model.

Double click MY computer and then open Dialup networking
Right click the ISP icon and click on Properties.
At the bottom advise the modem name in the box.

While you are there click on Server Types at the top
Make sure the following are Unticked.
Logon to network
NetBeui
IPX/Spx
Click OK
