But I think AVG is primarily a virus detector, and the AVG forum says as much.

What I didn't say was that remover.exe, a free tool for trojan and worm removing didn't detect the simulated trojan.

I am also picking you got the Java/ByteVerify trojan . . . . correct?

AVG can't fix that one, you have to do it manually but fortunately it is one of the easiest ones to fix .

You need to update Sun Java to the latest version for better protection and also ensure that the Sun Java is enabled rather than the Windows flavour .

I got the damn thing again . (I didn't update Sun Java) .

I manually removed it again, along with every aspect of Java I could find .

Hopefully I won't be infected again because I don't like being bossed into having to install Java - I'll just see how my browsing goes .
