Sorry I meant to put in the original message, as well as the phantom connection attempts I can't hear the modem pick up dial tone or dial out when using 'dial-up networking' But can ear it using ATDT in hyperterminal

319061 2005-01-30 03:47:00 [QUOTE=chriss121]Apologies for getting shirty but this problem is becoming annoying.
OK have ran Spybot and updated my anti-virus and ran that, and Nothing, Nada, Zilch........

If you have a dialer installed then they are not always picked up with Anti-Virus and Spybot. Run Ad-Aware as well but some dialers are quite well hidden and difficult to remove.
Try an online virus scan from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
or www.bitdefender.com if you can stay connected long enough.

When it disconnects are you able to connect again.

Try setting IE Tools/Options/Connections to never dial a connection and setup a shortcut on your desktop to connect with.

Have a look in Add/Remove programs for anything suspicious.

If you have system restore you could try going back a few days.

319062 2005-01-30 03:56:00 Thanx,
I'll run the online virus scans and see what happens.
I tried the IE tools/options thing and it didn't make any difference.
Yes I can reconnect but I have to either go into dial-up networking and delete the rogue connection or wait until it has attempted to connect and failed 10 times as I have set in options.
I'd rather not restore, I use this PC for work when at home and have a lot of douments etc that I'd need to back up.....

have just downloaded a different ad-ware tool, see if this works.

319063 2005-01-30 04:18:00 Hi Chrius. I've never had ME, jumping from 98 to XP. However, in XP restore does not interfere with your documents or data. Scouse (83)
319064 2005-01-30 04:31:00 are there any dodgie connections in the connect to panel (thats in xp) but in ME it could be under dial up networking.

i nailed a dailer for a friend a few weeks ago with spybot, which version do you have?

after you have fixed the problem, i suggest that you get zonealarm (http://www.zonelabs.com) its a very good free firewall :)

319065 2005-01-30 05:48:00 i have Spybot 1.3
have just downloaded and ran the latest version of Ad-Aware. It found 1220 critical objects but alas the problem still exists.
Will download the firewall and see what happens

Will leave the restore as a last resort as I don't really know what I'm doing with it.

319066 2005-01-30 05:57:00 what is in the add/remove panel? anything nastie? and what antivirus software do you have?

is there any indication of what it is called? who is it connecting to?

319067 2005-01-30 06:05:00 There's nothing nasty in the add/remove have checked that,
I'm using the latest norton and Antiv ver6.

The connections in dial-up networking have random sets of letters like TRNGM which changes with every connection, there's no telephone number just a 0 hene it failling each time
