319022 2005-01-29 04:09:00 My Gigabyte GA-8KNXP (Socket 478, P4) Motherboard has died after being only 18-months into a 24-month Warranty period.

The computer was assembled to my Spec. by Ascent.

I am told the board of my choice has been "unavailable for a long time".

Should I accept a 'refurbished' replacement or insist on a 'New' board (from somewhere)?

Or perhaps there is a new and updated replacement model available?

I need all the features that are supplied with the GA-8KNXP.

Peter.
I had the same board - I ended up buying a 2nd computer... went with an Asus P4C800 Deluxe board.

I have a spare 8KNXP at the moment, but I am not 100% sure if it is working properly or not... it started doing funny things on the IDE channels... anyway, the board was RMA'd in September last year and no replacement board was available even then!

I'd probably accept the refurbished board, as it is a very good board, but I'd ask for a longer warranty to ensure it is 'up to scratch.' ... hit them up for 12 months and see what they say.

319023 2005-01-29 04:30:00 I agree, the manufacturer could actually refurbish, just as long as you were sure it came from there.

As an aside, it's quite likely that a manufacturer refurbished board could have had more scrutiny than an original. It would be an entirely manual process.

The cost of refurbishing would exceed the new cost though, very easily. Why would they do it?

I had an 8mth old board that played up & it was sent back to Taiwan
Came back with what they had done to it (New BIOS)
It's been going well now for over a year
I often wonder "why did they?"
Surely the cost price of a replacement would be way below the repair/freight costs etc

319024 2005-01-29 09:15:00 Thanks for all the replies.

A 'refurbished' board has been supplied to Ascent but it too had a fault!

I am told "the replacement motherboard has a problem: DDR DIMMs Slots 1, 2 and 3 do not work, when a module is inserted the Mobo beeps. A capacitor next to DIMM 1 appears to be leaking."

Another replacement is now on the way.

Hardly inspires confidence. I don't know where this 'refurbished' board came from.

I had hopes that one of these new Mobos might be sitting in a dust-covered box on a shelf somewhere waiting to be inserted in a pc case.

319029 2005-01-30 10:58:00 Ah, so it's nothing to do with the Resource Management Act then.

Thanks for the info.
