318753 2005-01-29 05:44:00 Which are twice the speed as the previous Acer. The one I pointed out is not necessarily slower. You really can't use the word 'speed' to describe it's rating in Ghz. In fact, the one I pointed out, and that rmcb bought, has a mobile processor, which in this case of a laptop, is much better. The 'speed' may be slower, but performance should be not much worse, if not equal or better, and battery life will last for w-a-y---- longer. ~sy~ (95)

318756 2005-01-29 09:36:00 I have an ACER Travelmate 244 Laptop which I bought 6-8 months ago for $1800 approx and its great, runs well and does all the basics soundly.
Great value laptop if you can get it now for $1500-odd.
I would thoroughly recommend Ascent as an online place to shop as well -- I have done a ton of business with them with no problems at all -- they are excellent to deal with.

318757 2005-01-29 10:05:00 Have had a look at one of these, www.protac.com.au
They are very low power units and will do most things.
They use a Transmeta CPU which is a Risk cpu and use software to convert to x86 code
for windows use.
The need for software will slow it down a bit but has the advantage of being able to be
upgrade as needed by a simple software update.
and the price is very sharp!
Here are the specs:
· Transmeta TM-8600 CPU ( Similar performance with Intel Celeron 2.6GHz CPU )

· 14.1” TFT 1024x768 LCD Screen

· 40GB HDD

· 256MB DDR RAM

· DVD COMBO Drive

· XGI XP5 Graphics with 32MB DDR Video RAM

· 8-Cell Battery

· USB2.0 ports

With respect while these transmeta chips are cool/power misers they would not rate up with a celeron 2.6 no matter how dire celerons are. I've seen that comment used in several adds. If they were they would be dominating the market despite intel's monoply. More equivalent to a p3 500 in actual performance.
