319168 2005-01-29 21:18:00 Last week I set up my old PC in my brother-in-law's home .
All went well, it connected to the internet OK and the dial up
download speed was surprisingly fast . However now there is a problem:
after dialing, it tries to connect but after 5 seconds the connection
automatically is broken with an error message . I cannot recall the
exact wording or the error message but it is something about not being
able to connect to the ISP - not that the password or login name is incorrect,
i . e . , it is before the password/login is submitted .

I suspect that the home wiring is faulty, and here is my reasoning:
When pluging the phone or the PC into the wall jack, sometimes there
is no connection and the plug has to be reinserted . When inserting the phone
or the PC cord, a bell in the ceiling rings briefly - yep, a bell in the ceiling;
apparently previous owners were deaf and they needed a loud bell .

Maybe this extra add-on to the line causes problems??
Also, we tried two different double adapters (in the wall jack) and we
could not get both the phone and PC to work, one was dead .
BTW, it is an old house that is in big need of renovations inside and out - wiring included .

It is weird that I was able to get connected the first time, last week, and
had a good download speed .

I have tried two different ISPs - iHug and Paradise, with the same problem of
getting disconnected prior to the password/login stage .

The old PC has never had any problems connecting to the Net .
Specs: Win98 with updates, Celeron 400, 128 Mb RAM, 12Gb HD .
An old PC but works very well . :p

I am not sure if there is Call Waiting - my bro in law is away for the
weekend and cannot be contacted . If he does have Call Waiting, what
do I add to the dial up networking?
- But then I wonder why I could connect to the Net last week when I set up the PC?

Is there any other setting in Dial Up Networking
that should be adjusted?

Thanks - Steve

319169 2005-01-29 21:33:00 It might be call waiting put *52, in front of the dialup number. Speedy Gonzales (78)
319170 2005-01-29 21:51:00 Call waiting will not prevent you connecting, Call Minder might if there are messages waiting as this can give a No Dial Tone error.

If you can't get a dialtone with a normal phone at the jack point the computer is using then the modem will also fail to connect due to no dialtone.

Sounds like a wiring problem, try disconnecting any other phones that are connected in the house also try another lead from the computer to the phone jack.

319171 2005-01-29 22:01:00 Safari - A dial tone is detected . He does have Call Minder, so if there is a message, I will ensure that a dial tone is not needed to detect, by way of that option in Dial Up Networking . There are no other phones in the house .

Speedy - I will try *52, but apparently this will not prevent a connection .

Remember that the modem WILL dial and WILL attempt a connection but then after 5 seconds disconnection occurs .

319172 2005-01-29 22:31:00 Clear any messages on Call Minder before connecting.

It would also help if you advised the exact error message and error number that you are getting.

If you disable the Wait for dialtone in Dialup networking it will not help if the modem can't get a dialtone, all it will do is not give you the No Dialtone error even though this is what is happening.
I suggest you tick that option again as it make fault finding easier.

319173 2005-01-29 23:49:00 is there any extension phone leads? i see that you are using a double adapter, dont use these, they are just as bad a long extenstion lead, i know because that was one of my problem a while back.

have you tried to slow the modem down?, is there any background noise? can you take that "bell" out, we have one of those in our house(it was there when we moved in) and our internet was still good.

wasnt there 2 versions of telephone line in a house? and the new one is copper?? not too sure on that but id say thats the issue.

319174 2005-01-30 01:54:00 If the extra bell is a "bell", it's a veteran relic, and is probably loading the phone line quite severely. It will be on the third (ringing wire) of a 3 wire system. I would be inclined to climb into the roof space and have an accident with sidecutters near the bell. ;) Graham L (2)
319175 2005-01-30 02:45:00 OK, thanks guys. I will happily snip the veteran bell.

No, am not using a double adapter, and there are no phone extensions.

Will go over to his house this afternoon, then will get back here with the results.

319177 2005-01-30 05:13:00 the question is "what did you change" ??

if it all worked OK the other day and not it is not working then what has changed since then??
