| 319771 | 2005-01-31 13:09:00 | Hi, my first post here :) I will probably sound like an idiot, but this is the first time I deal with broadband (been on dial up before) A couple of weeks ago I decided to switch to Jetbuster plan (slingshot) and today I got a call from telecom that it's ready to go. ("just plug in the modem and you're ready to go") As always nothing ever goes smoothly :( My ADSL modem is DSE USB XH1172 (guy at the store said it's alright for casual internet). So I install the drivers from CD, follow instructions etc.. Finally I'm done and I seem to have a connection going, however I run into 2 weird things: 1. After checking my network connections (windows XP) I notice a new connection active under "LAN or High Speed Internet" which connected at 10mbps as soon I plugged in the modem. 2. I couldn't surf the net because I still wasn't connected. Going into my modem setting through USB point login with admin access, I notice that I am indeed not connected (went into quick start) and here where I ran into another problem: when I clicked connect, the icon at the bottom of my screen flashed several times and said "Internet Connection Closed" I have tried literally everything slingshot online help offered. Tinkered with DNS setting etc. When I looked through the log I found out that ADSL seems to connect fine, until it reaches the password/username authentication. Now that is impossible since I my username is what slingshot suggests (name@jetbuster.co.nz) and my pass cannot be wrong since I can log into my account from slingshot.co.nz. I even phoned tech support to make sure. Has anyone run into this problem before? I am really desparate for any suggestions :( |

There are 2 lights, "Link" - It flashes several times and stays green, after the connection is establishes (the 10mbps one). The other light "power" turns on when I plug in the modem obviously. Are you using splitters on your phone line? Yes, the only one without splitter is the modem itself (which is right according to instructions) Set the connection setting in IE to never dial a connection. Just checked it, was on never dial already. Tried it a few more times, ran diagnostic test, same problem everything is fine until user/name authentication - once that fails, most of the other things are skipped and internet connection closes :( |

| 319774 | 2005-01-31 19:27:00 | Hi. I switched from Slingshot dialup to their broadband service recently. Yes, their online "help" is no help at all. It cost me a 10 dollar phone call to their tech support to find out, but here's what I was doing wrong: Username changes from [name]@slingshot.co.nz to [name]@jetbuster.co.nz (no mention of that on their online "help") Set to "Always Dial Default Connection" Like you, I assumed that "always on" broadband meant no dial-up & so selected Never Dial A Connection, like you did. Set Jetbuster as your default connection & set to always dial that connection. :) |

Does this modem have a log/connection status/uptime counter? If so have a look at it and let us know what it's doing. Is there a tick box in the modems control that says something like " Dial on demand", if so tick it. (IE only modem interface connection is it? they need a clip under the nose). Did you use the XP wizard or set the network connections manually? If the wizard, delete that one and start over manually in Network & Dialup Connections in Control Panel and, make sure the XP firewall is off. If you get a successful connection don't leave it sans a firewall, but I'd be inclined to use Kerio, Zone Alarm or Agnitum Outpost in favour of the XP one. You may need to set it to allow access to the net although defaults should pick up your intent. USB modems are more likely to play up if your connection to the exchange is not ideal while ethernet routers are much better at handing poor connections. If this turns out to be your situation, give the nice man at DSE a clip under the nose with the modem when you take it back :@@: I doubt it'll do him any harm. |

Link light are on. The ADSL light is on but its flicking all time and I cant go into the Internet Explorer at all. I brought this ADSL modem from Slingshot. I'm using the dial-up at the moment. I had ADSL modem for a week now. I fellowed the instructions from the book but it's not still working. The helpdesk were total hopeless... |

| 319777 | 2005-06-19 08:57:00 | When I joined Xtra recently, I had the same problem (call from Telecom tech saying good to go, lights on but noone home). Ring the helpdesk and ensure your account is activated... when I rang Xtra they discovered the account wasn't due to be activated until the day after. However they activated there and then on the phone. Try pinging www.google.com or another website. Another thing I discovered (while configuring Linux) was the DNS addresses, get them and make sure they are entered under DNS |
