319763 2005-01-31 09:36:00 Hello,
I have just been given a computer which has hard drive probelms. On start up it says the HD has bad sectors and wants to do a scan disk however this takes a very long time and continously brings up the message that it has found a problem and requires me to push "Fix it" in order for it to continue. I tried Scan Disk in windows however it froze part way through. Is there a easier way to repair a sick HD or what are my options?

Thanks.

319764 2005-01-31 09:53:00 The disk sounds "shot" to be honest.

The Scandisk is trying to test each cluster and when it finds one that is not reliable (i.e. the magnetic integrity is suspect) it tries to recover data from it and marks it as bad so it cannot be used again. You could try to reformat it, but the problems will most likely resurface either immediately or in the near future.

But look on the bright side, with a little effort pull the sucker apart and get two wickedly stong fridge magnets out of it. :)

What is a good HD i can get for a reasonable price - i only need say a 20-40GB for this machine?

Thanks!

319768 2005-01-31 10:15:00 Most of the drives are much the same for the same spec's, mu preference is Seagate but you'll be ok with a Western Digital or Maxtor. The sweet spot for $$ per GB is 80GB and climbing, check out PriceSpy (www.pricespy.co.nz). Personally I wouldn't bother with a 5400rpm drive, you may want to move it to a faster system some time in the future and you don't want a slow drive clogging the show up. Murray P (44)
