319445 2005-01-30 14:14:00 Last night, my puter crashed and died. Efforts to even turn it on were fruitless as there seemed to be no input going from the puter to the screen even - it just sat there with a blank screen, even though i could hear the fan going. This morning, I checked connections etc etc and still no luck. After starting it again to find the blank screen and leaving it like that for a few minutes, it finally kicked into life and booted up, although it was terribly slow.

A couple of weeks ago, Netscape crashed on me for no apparent reason and I lost all the bookmarks. As a result of that, i upgraded ZoneAlarm, and trialled the Pro version, deciding in the end to revert back to the free version. I am wondering if the problems I have got are a result of that - I notice now that the program controls change from the settings that I give them so that I have to manually make the changes before starting the dial up process.

As a result of all this, I have been trying to dload some software to check for viruses etc, though i have Zone Alarm, PC-cillin, Spybot and Nortons. However, when i go to CNet or Tucows, I can't dload anything at all because I keep getting the message that it cant find dw.com.com or i.i.com.com. My puter doesnt recognise any CD I put in the drive so I can't take anything off the discs that come with PC World.

I have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+, 256MB RAM running XP Home edition, 3 years old.

Is my hard drive dying? Do I have a virus? Is there a problem with my power perhaps? HELP!!

319446 2005-01-30 19:42:00 Try and see if u can get this

www.simplysup.com

Download it update it then do a scan....

Also select the 3rd and 4th option under the utils menu. See if that fixes the prob. With the browsing.

I would also open the case up see which fan is spinning, if the power supply has a fan as well. You might as well see if everything else in the case, is in properly (cables, ram etc).

Also, if the PC is still going, go to start/run and type msconfig. Tell us whats in the startup tab. Might be something here thats causing the prob with the slowness.

Have you made sure Spybot S&D has the latest definitions by using the built-in updater? Jen (38)

.com.com is the CNet domain - maybe an ad referer or download mirror or something? I would be surprised if Spybot picks anything up regarding that domain (I could be wrong?), however it might pick something else up that is causing the problems.

I beg to differ, Jen. :)

dw.com.com is adware as apposed to spyware. There is a big difference. I use software and sites that include adware (Gmail includes Adware, as does ICQ and Download Accellerator and similar), but I try not to use software and sites that include spyware (sites or software that monitor other aspects of your computer use other than just browsing habits etc. for ad displaying etc.). Adware doesn't have to be bad (although occasionally it seems to be), it is usually more annoying. Spyware is bad.

Feel free to prove me wrong though - I'm always open to learn something new :)

Cheers,
Mike.

319451 2005-01-30 22:47:00 If the computer won't, or is slow to boot up, then there won't be any software running, and therefore no possible virus or Spyware/Adware/Hijacker can afect it.

Chances are that the problem is hardware related, and CPU, MotherBoard, memory, video cards and drives can cause it. First would be to reset the BIOS. Re-detect the drives, if not auto. then a matter of elimination after that.
