It's sky digital, through a decoder, I can get every VHF channel crystal clear, probably even the maori channel, it's just when tuned to the sky digital decoders channel 38 output, the picture is quite grainy. There is a digital to UHF converter/splitter between the aerial & the main 6 way splitter, the tv card is connected to one of the 6 way splitters outputs. I have a tv connected to that socket as well, the picture is clear on all channels. It makes no difference if the telly is connected to that socket or not, the picture's still grainy on sky

319756 2005-02-01 09:39:00 is there any booster between the sky decoder and the 6 way splitter?

the tv card may require a lot higher signal than what your tv does. the sky decoders (depending on how its setup a bit) only can handle a 3 way splitter max. after that it depends a lot on what type of tv you are running. some tv's work ok on weak signal, others don't.

319757 2005-02-01 09:50:00 There's no booster fitted at all. I went to the aerial intallation shop who kindly lent me the tools to do a pro job on the coax connections. I showed them what I wanted to do, I bought the equipment from them & installed it according to their diagram. I've tested all the wiring for shorts & continuity, it's all ok. The digital to uhf splitter isn't adjustable. The shop thought the output would be enough, it is for all the tellys. Are you saying that the tv cards are not very strong in the reception department?
I did try a booster a few years ago. Bought it from the hardware store (no names) it was crap, cost me $70 as wel,l lost everything. Swapped it for another, tried again. Had no faith in them since

i assume you mean sky decoder ??

every tv/tuner is different.....some brands are well known for requireing strong signal.

if you have the decoder feeding into a 6 way splitter then the signal will be week. amps have there uses but they need to be used correctly for them to be effective. if you amp crap all you get is crap. also to high a signal can give you a few werid problems.

319759 2005-02-01 10:42:00 I agree with tweak'e here, splitting a signal 6 ways unamplified is going to be marginal at best, and it is very poor practice .

Each splitter output must have less than 15% of the input signal by the time splitter losses are accounted for, and that is just not sufficient in many cases for all types of receivers .

The insertion loss of a digital Sky decoder is quite high, so outgoing signals are not that good to start with .

interesting way of putting it.

sky decoders output around 70db (a bit higher than what they should be). you lose roughly 5db per leg of the splitter minus one leg (with good gear it can be 3db). so 6 way split loses 25db. therefore end signal should be 45db. tv's as a general rule require minimum of 50db for a good pic. however every tv is different, some will run good on 45, some need 60. 2nd catch is the decoder output is very noisy. you need a lot higher signal to get a good pic. so if you treat it like standard video outputs (whch is 60db) your effective signal at the tv is only 35db. to give some idea on how low 35db is, a basic amp needs 45db minimum to be effective.
i hope all that makes sence godfather :)

319761 2006-01-06 02:14:00 You'll be lucky to get digital sky or UHF sky with that card. It wont work.

I have had one of these cards and run UHF sky throught it for free?
