2005-02-01 08:42:00 | I have three password protected documents (require a password to open), but I can't remember my password. I am always careful to use a combination of upper & lower case, letters & numbers - and never to write a password down (that was the killer!). I have found lots of downloadable utilities, but most require payment before they will look for anything complicated. Can anyone recommend one that is worth paying for? | R0sered (7098) | |

2005-02-02 07:13:00 | Thanks for the quick responses. I've tried both and so far am no further ahead. I downloaded the file suggested by Johnboy, and nearly 24 hours later it still hadn't cracked it (it does warn that searching for more than 6 characters might be "probitively" slow). I also had a look at the link suggested - but this seems to apply to passwords to modify - my problem is a password to open. I think I have been too diligent in choosing a difficult password! Thanks anyway!

2005-02-02 07:23:00 | I needed a Word (97) password cracker once, sorry can't remember the name, but it took seconds not minutes. I have since learned, though not tried, that if you insert one word file into another the inserted one is no longer password protected. Worth a try, open a new doc > Insert > File > browse to your locked/protected word doc, highlight and click ok or double click. HTH

2005-02-02 08:23:00 | . . . if you insert one word file into another the inserted one is no longer password protected . . . Tried this in Word 2000 but it only works if the file has been set "Not to Modify" . The new document contents can now be modified . If it has been set to open with a password - no dice . It won't open .

2005-02-02 08:34:00 | I doubt you will be able to find a free version to obtain the password, and most commercial software is cripled in some way for trial versions. Most use a brute force or dictionary based method of determining the password, and the longer the password the longer it will take to recover the password. You may find trial versions will only find passwords of a certain length (say 3-4 characters) or not give the ability to save the file. If your desperate to obtain the document then your going to have to fork out cash. Im not recommending this one as I havent used it but a friend reckons this works... www.elcomsoft.com
