| 319819 | 2005-01-31 20:31:00 | Sorry 'bout all my recent laptop queries... it's all still new to me. When I'm using the laptop on mains power should I keep the battery on/off switch on all the time? (it works off mains whether the switch is on or off). Just wondered if the constant power to the battery may shorten its life. Thanks. |

| 319820 | 2005-01-31 21:58:00 | Hello Greg, The switch should be always set to on, the only time you need to switch it off is if you need to replace the battery or upgrade the ram or similar. Regards AC |

| 319822 | 2005-01-31 23:09:00 | Hello Greg, The on/off switch has just started appearing on the new design ASUS models. These models are supplied with the battery already installed into the body of the Laptop (unlike conventional Laptop design that has the battery inserted into the body from the outside by the user) the switch is set to off when it leaves the factory, you must switch it to on the first time you use the Laptop or the battery will not charge. To service the battery, you return the switch to off then just undo the 4 screws on the bottom of the laptop and slide off the bottom in one piece, giving access to the bulk of the laptops internals (Ram, CPU, modem, far easier than conventional Laptop design) I think the theory behind locating the battery there as well, is they are long life batteries and should not need servicing for a few years. (remains to be tested in practice) Also, I have just noted that ASUS have changed their accessory bundle with the new models (previously a Bag and Optical Mouse) now a copy of MS Works, I know what I would rather have !! Regards AC |

Yeah my manual tells me that replacing CPU is a user enabled ability, which I thought woulda been difficult/impossible in laptops before I had this one (Asus A4500L). Re the accessories - the specs I saw from my vendor's site included a bag, and made no mention of Works nor a mouse. What I got when I bought the thing included a mouse (a very cool one too - quite sweet to use), Works, and no bag. The vendor had copied and pasted Asus' specs on their site, which of course included the bag. The NZ distributor doesn't do the bags, and I had a minor argument with Vendor, and me being such a persuasive fella, got the bag thrown in, and delivered via courier at 7:00 next morning no less! Having said the above, I could've got the shebang for 50 bucks less from an across-town retailer sans bag, but bah... Auckland harbour bridge crossing in traffic lessens lifespan by a week per crossing I reckon |
