2005-01-31 19:03:00 | I have an old 333mhz PC that had a 40x CD ROM. Loaded with win98se - this machine goes well. I had the opportunity to sell the 40x speed CD ROM and install a 52x CD ROM. Simply unplugging and re-plugging in the new drive - it all seemed easy.... However, when I install a CD the drive doesn't play/open it. It comes up with a message 'drive not available'. I've tried a range of things including deleting it in Device Mgr & restarting the PC. It finds the CD ROM & installs OEM CD ROM F563E driver - the drive is a BTC BCD F563E. But it still won't open CDs. I've even reloaded the OS (which I keep on the second drive) - still no luck. The drivers for the BTC drive have to be loaded in DOS - which I've done. The 52x has been used on another PC I have and it goes well with that one - I didn't even have to install special drivers! Has anyone got any ideas what to try next?

2005-01-31 19:11:00 | does the drive detect in dos. and do you have the jumpers set correctly ? | drcspy (146) | |
2005-01-31 19:23:00 | DOS doesn't seem to see it. The jumpers should be set to SLAVE - I'll double check now. I didn't alter the jumper - - it worked on the other PC so I didn't see the need. | straka01 (310) | |
2005-01-31 20:01:00 | I've changed the jumper to MASTER for the CD ROM - rebooted and it's still the same - comes up with the message - drive is not accessible? | straka01 (310) | |
2005-02-01 01:57:00 | its a BTC :( i've had problems like this before with some of them. i have no idea what it is, the drives just seem to be very touchy on what systems they work in.
