320028 2005-02-01 03:25:00 I am currently running Win98 SE . I an having provlems which lead me to believe I should do a new install. I have put off going to XP as Win98Se has been a reliable platform for me.
Should I be aware of any problems if i install XP ?
Can I install drectly over Win98 SE ?

320029 2005-02-01 03:32:00 If you are doing it properly it's hardly worth spending money on an XP upgrade. If 98SE has been OK up to now on your old comp wait until you get a new one with XP. PaulD (232)
320030 2005-02-01 03:39:00 if you do an upgrade to XP (install directly over 98) it may not fix any of the problems you have. its best to do a clean install.

however without knowing what sort of pc you have and if XP drivers are advailable for ALL of your hardware i couldn't say if XP would even work on your pc.

320031 2005-02-01 03:54:00 Hi Dennis.
Just be prepared for the new OS to reject some of your existing programmes and hardware. A pre-run of the XP CD will advise you of a variety of items it does not like and which it acticipates problems. In my case this included some old programmes. lots of games and my elderly scanner, which I had to replace because there were no upgrade drivers, etc. It also warned that it would not like Works 4.5 which I was using for a lot of things. However after loading XP it was then possible to reload the backed up 4.5 and its data. Wierd. I upgraded from 98SE but eventually bit the bullet and made a clean load of XP. As tweak'e says, just changing the OS may not resolve xisting problems. Good luck.
