1364325 2014-01-05 18:05:00 I think those execs must have read my thread about going back to the old Office Menu's.

But hey thanks for a really great read.
Never heard of half of them tho.

And don't forget that decisions to go wit Windows 8 / ribbons etc would not have been made by one or two people alone.

And I do see the need for MS to move ahead and become more modern in the UI eg touch screens etc.

1364326 2014-01-05 18:11:00 A very enlightening read. Always thought 7 outshone 8 especially on desktop! Bryan (147)
1364327 2014-01-05 18:48:00 If Microsoft had not alienated desktop users from the start with Windows 8 they might have had a better uptake

Read somewhere that they plan in the next release to add back the start menu as a option for Desktops that most have been missing especially in the Business world

Some comments here give better insight on whats going on

I wonder if any on here have abandoned the desk= top in favour of other devises.?

1364329 2014-01-05 20:21:00 Quite a few of my friends have given up on desktops and bought ipads etc.

I think its a world wide trend.

The business office and the gamers and the power users will always need desk tops.

But the rest just want something that works easily and is cheap and that they can replace (buy a new one) every 2 or 3 years.

The next 2 or 3 years will be very interesting.

1364330 2014-01-05 20:50:00 I now do the majority of reading/video watching type things on my TF700 (Tablet) however still use a desktop PC for any real work. IMO a tablet is ideal for casual entertainment and reading email etc. it is particularly good for those who just want to do things and have no real interest in learning or for that matter understanding how their machine actually works. 1364331 2014-01-05 21:10:00 I thought the stated goal that µSoft wanted was ubiquitous computing, looks like that is what is happening just not µSoft based systems due to their incredible arrogance and disregard of the stated needs and wishes of the users (cf Win8 plus Office 'ribbon') coupled with operating systems riddled with exploitable code and a succession of less than satisfactory major updates to the core operating system. zqwerty (97)

Steve Jobs explained it on On All Things D back in 2010

Will tablets replace PCs?
"I'm trying to think of a good analogy. When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were trucks. But as people moved more towards urban centers, people started to get into cars. I think PCs are going to be like trucks. Less people will need them. And this transformation is going to make some people uneasy... because the PC has taken us a long way. They were amazing. But it changes. Vested interests are going to change. And, I think we've embarked on that change. Is it the iPad? Who knows? Will it be next year or five years? ... We like to talk about the post-PC era, but when it really starts to happen, it's uncomfortable."
