1363513 2013-12-25 06:32:00 The warehouse sell a couple of cheap brands of weedkiller with identical ingredients and instructions to roundup, and having used both I can testify to the fact they are identical. I had a patch of overgrown grass and weeds behind my shed that was about 4 foot high, killed that just fine. Takes a couple weeks to work and you still have the dead vegetation to deal with. They also sell real roundup so if you want confirmation pick up a bottle of each, look at the crazy price difference, then turn it around and confirm it's the same stuff. dugimodo (138)

1363515 2013-12-25 07:13:00 What about plastic tarps across the area? Blocks the light, blocks the water, everything dies, but at least the ground isn't poisoned, and all done in 30 mins.
If the budget doesn't stretch to enough tarps, just move the one tarp every 2 weeks till the job is done.
I agree most strongly. Black plastic sheet works great. Kills all plants really fast on sunny days. If you can get old silage pit covers they're big, tough and cheap. Failing that, black plastic rubbish bags slit to make a flat single layer are just as good if a bit more wind prone.
For short vegetation, a day in sunny weather is overkill, but the dirt is unharmed. Longer stuff should be trampled so the solar heat gets to all of it to knock it silly as a poitician's sidekick.

1363516 2013-12-25 09:03:00 Go to your local RD1 shop, ask for the person who knows about weed spraying, they should be able to sort you out. After you have killed all the current weeds wait three-four months, then spray all the regrowth. It should be easy to control after that. PPp (9511)
1363517 2013-12-25 21:00:00 I've got about an 8th of an acre back yard . . .

My sister's neighbour had a similar problem - but a totally different solution to all the above ones .
They built a fence to block off the backyard and for a dollar a year, let the neighbour over the old back fence use it for an extended veggie garden .

But for you to do this, you need one of your 3 neighbours to be a real garden enthusiast .

Also, you need to make sure you "rent" it to him - otherwise the neighbour may acquire "squatting rights" .

1363519 2014-01-05 19:59:00 I hear 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D are pretty good for reducing unwanted foliage to nothing in a very short time, especially when combined . . . . ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Agent_Orange" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org)

The other difficult matter is actually procuring it . . .

Actually while 2,4,5-T isn't sold in NZ, 2,4-D is and I use it occasionally for thistles and hemlock - plants that laugh at glyphosate . Its a very effective herbicide . agpro . co . nz/farming/grass-friendly-herbicide/13-2-4-d-ester-680" target="_blank">www . agpro . co . nz

The problem with Agent Orange was the 2,4,5-T contained dioxins and the total mix used was intensely poisonous and residual . Still, we probably wouldn't have ever heard of it if US soldiers hadn't had to move through spray zones absorbing chemicals through the skin and breathing contaminated dust . Awful .
