320960 2005-02-02 22:38:00 Anybody using or trialed Lindows yet?
Any good?
I was thinking of downloading & trying it out.
Waste of bandwidth or worth a try?
Any opinions or links to comparison/review sites appreciated
Cheers

320961 2005-02-03 00:40:00 It's a Linux.

It looks like MS Windows.

It is still be a *nix under the look. That might catch you from time to time. It is not Windows; it's a real operating system and real operating systems don't all "follow" the MS way. They were here first. ;)

320962 2005-02-03 02:50:00 Yep I know it's Linux based Graham
I run 2 Linux servers so I think I'll be able to get my way around it ok
I was really wondering if anyone was using it & if they like it
Also Hardware & driver issues
I've got to setup 20 desktops off a Linux server & was thinking about Lindows
I don't want to use Windows & was going to use Mandrake or Xandros for the desktops & then got thinking about Lindows....
I might just download it & see for myself
Thanks

EDIT:
This should really be in Chat, a Mod may like to move it for me, thanks

320963 2005-02-03 02:52:00 Don't bother searching for "Lindows", though.

Didn't Uncle Bill sue them & force a name change?

"Linspire", I think it is now.

320964 2005-02-03 02:53:00 No, this is fine here :)

Drivers etc are fine, it uses a pretty recent kernel so you shouldnt have many issues

Sucks you've gotta buy your applications.

If you're wanting to pay for Linux, then go with Xandros.
If you're after a Doze look-alike but dont wanna pay, then try Lycoris

Chill.

320965 2005-02-03 03:12:00 Xandros has an open source version, with all the basics ie office suite (open office), games, web browser etc. The reason I use it on my laptop is the support for win modems ( picked it up straight away) , another thing I like about it is it supports both rpms and deb packages, I have installed firefox from rpm and a couple of deb packages as well and while some of the applications are pay for use, some are not. I was going to test Linspire but the cd flew to peices in the drive.
Xandros is Debian based
The free version of Xandros is crippled very slighty (nothing that would effect a Home user). I have Samba running, sharing both files and a windows printer (xp).

320966 2005-02-03 04:08:00 Mmmm... It is marginally dated, but still very good :)

AFAIK it limits the speed of inbuilt CDR Burning (Search the Forum for a How-To install K3b) and uses Opera with Ads rather than Mozilla.. As well as lacking Crossover Office - Nothing major :)
