320862 2005-02-02 14:16:00 Hi there. We have a (well am meant to have) the 2mbit connection from Xtra (2mbit/192kb) with a 10GB limit. Over the last nearly two weeks, I have notice the speed dropping. I have now gone over our limit but before then, using the Jet Stream testing site, we were only getting around 1.6mbit (240kbs download) connection and now that I have gone over the limit, I know we havn't been capped yet but we are only getting just under 100kbs download. Has Xtra/Telecom messed up or is it the wiring at this house. Interested in hearing from other people with the some connection

Thanks

ProMaz

P.S: I just tested the speed again and got this:

Your line speed is approximately 1948.4 Kbps or 238.8 K bytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

I know you are thinking 1948 is close to 2mbit BUT when we where first connected it was always getting around 2.3 ~ 2.4 (2300 ~ 24000).

320863 2005-02-02 14:34:00 My guess is that you are getting some of the problems that Orcon UBS is experiencing - basically the local data circuits are congested.

Check your router/modem connection speeds though, to see the connection speeds there are waht you expect.

It could pay to check with some people who use the same telephone exchange to rule out cable damage/changes in your local area.

320864 2005-02-02 18:47:00 I swapped from the 3Gb @ 256kb/s to the 10Gb @ 2Mb/s connection (via Xtra) on the 26th January. To check that it had happened, I used the Jetstream speed test and got around 1600kb/s. I have just retried and am still getting around 1600kb/s (1591 kb/s to be exact). I know that my line is capable of better from the days when the Jetstreamgames realm was at full speed (8Mb/s). Miami Steve (2128)
320865 2005-02-02 19:24:00 I have a friend who's having similar issues.

He's not too far from the exchange, connectiong at around 4400kbps. Upload connection at 320kbps

Now going to jetstreamgames.co.nz/speed and doing the 1mb test, he gets about 1900kbps download. This is close enough....

However, when downloading, only downloads from an australian mirror will actually reach over 200KB/s. Anything else (Even multi-threaded downloads) dont seem to break 60KB/s :(

We're trying to get about 7-8 downloads at once to see if it'll max out his 2mbps, otherwise this weekend hes going to try take the gear back.

Chill.

Depends on what you are testing, when and a lot of other things.

I know sites I can download off at 250kB/s and also sites I can only get 20kB/sec. It is called load factor of the net and how things are running. Certain times of the day/night will get different results and so will different sites. If you get 1.6mbs all the time then you are doing pretty good and have nothing to complain about.

320867 2005-02-03 08:14:00 Personally, I think you should go back to dial up.
Not because I am jealous or anything.
Then you wouldn't have any of those speed problems.
I mean, whats wrong with 50Kbps.
Its usually reliable, and besides, you have time for another coffee and smoke while you wait for everything to happen.

Sleep on it.
After all, our country was built on dial up.
Why abandon her now she needs you more than ever.

320868 2005-02-03 10:12:00 ProMaz - your speeds are fine for the plan you're paying for Greg (193)
