| 320762 | 2005-02-02 10:00:00 | The fax machine has thrown a wobbly. Error message 81. The manual says "Machine Error xx - contact your Brother dealer for service". The Brother websites pretend that faxes over 10 years old no longer exist and sheds no light. Anyone know what error 81 is? Is it fixable or, more likely, time for a replacement? |

| 320763 | 2005-02-02 20:09:00 | This is what there web site says to do if you get that error. TITLE: What does "MACHINE ERROR 81" mean? DESCRIPTION: Machine Error XX indicates a mechanical malfunction of the FAX/DCP/MFC. "XX" represents the error number. Unplug the unit from the power source and then plug it back in. If the the error message continues to be displayed on the LCD, call Brother Customer Service at: solutions.brother.com Errors global.solutions.brother.com I would email them to see if they can help . If no one helps with a fix. www.brother.co.nz hth |

The manual said the same thing and I did email them last night but thought there was a possibility I might get a quicker response if I asked here. Turned it off and back on last night a couple of times but it just beeped at me. Left it off overnight and it's working now. What I failed to mention was that it would be the third time this month it has happened (although it started again the last times). It has now gone from the "ignore it, it worked" stage to the "do something" stage. Finding out what the error means is a good start. |

Good work horse that lasts a long time." But he refused to define long time. It is between 10 and 15 years old - a long time in comparison to the microwave. |

When a machine has an error like that, it would be required to go into a local service agent, but with an old machine outside of its warranty, its best to purchase a new machine rather that get it repaired as the cost would exceed the price of a new unit Phew, I made the right decision! |
