320692 2005-02-02 05:01:00 First it went grey then I started pulling it out....

I just did a partition, format and reload of win98se...
Now the modem (conexant 56k PCI) is not detected.
It does not feature on the drop down list of manufacturers when I try to load it.
I have a driver for it but it wants an installation disc...
Presumably that is more than just a driver ?
Is it possible to dl installation stuff as well as just drivers?
members.driverguide.com is where I got the driver.

The modem is working fine in XP on another drive and worked fine in 98se til the reinstall.
any clues hugely appreciated :)

320693 2005-02-02 05:14:00 Just unzip that file into its own folder with winzip.

And then go to device manager and point it to that folder. The drivers should load.

320694 2005-02-02 05:15:00 How are you trying to load the driver? Through the "detect new hardware box" or in control panel somewhere?

If you haven't tried it already:
Settings
Control Panel
System
Device Manager
Click on the yellow question mark for the modem and find the update driver button

(No guarantees on this one but if you haven't tried it it might work)

320695 2005-02-02 06:19:00 After formatting and reinstalling Windows did you install the motherboard drivers? FoxyMX (5)
320696 2005-02-02 07:28:00 criky we have had a big run of this question lately.......is there a class project/assignment going on at the moment ???

you need to install ALL drivers. as a rule of thumb windows dosn't come with any decent drivers. its stock drivers is enough to get a basic pc running and thats it. everything needs its own drivers and some things (pci cards etc) will not work correctly (or at all) with out certain drivers installed first (eg motherboard).

320697 2005-02-02 08:27:00 Holy cow the MB needs drivers too ?!
good grief I've reinstalled before only needed monitor, gpu and modem drivers.
The system seems fine apart from the modem.

I have been doing it through the system/devices/ yellow question mark route :)
That modem driver dosn't get loaded Its unziped and in a folder...
Would the fact that I d/l it with XP on the other drive make it unreadable to 98? Its in a partition that 98 can see and the files are there...

glad I'm not the only poor sod in this state...
maybe others can gain from my pain ;)

thanks
Pete

320698 2005-02-02 08:32:00 R U 100% sure it's the correct driver, there are hundreds for conextant chips
Check the chip on the modem & make sure it matches the driver U downloaded

320699 2005-02-02 08:39:00 Silly question I'm sure... but are you SURE you have the correct drivers for the modem?

Now before you say "Of course, how could I be THAT stupid" I'll let you into a secret. A couple of weeks ago I reformatted the other half's computer. A couple of years back when I last did it I wrote some really detailed instructions and put the disks containing the drivers with it (idea being that HE could do it next time!).

Do you think I could get his audio drivers to work? Much knashing of teeth - and a few choice words - later I remembered one rather significant but easily overlooked point. Mother board died a year ago and was replaced. The disk was for the old one. Found the invoice, googled the model number, found the drivers and it worked.

Don't suppose you have an invoice or something for it with model number on it?

YES !

the motherboard id the heart of the pc . it needs to run the best it can .
one comman problem of useing stock windows drivers for the motherboard is windows may not find and/or install add on cards such as modems .

i've just finished a pc that someone hasn't install the motherboard drivers . once the motherboard drivers where installed windows picked up some new hardware and the pc certainly runs better . plus the niggly graphics problem has now gone :)

320701 2005-02-02 09:18:00 If modem drivers are an issue, often easier to grab a new modem for $20 then spending hours chasing drivers. Conexant chipsets cover hundreds of modem models. ninja (1671)
