320612 2005-02-02 00:32:00 I know it is possible to 'Speak" to someone in the UK using web cam & Mic. However that needs a computer at both ends., on Messenger. Is it possible to speak to someone there using a computer here but into their phone on BT, Free as in Messenger? PJ Poppa John (284)
320613 2005-02-02 02:20:00 I'm no great expert on this but I don't think you can do that. The reason is that you will need to connect into the BT POTS network and BT will want a ticket clip for that. However, you might look at service such as Skype. They can get to the UK via the IP network then connect into BT. So you end up only paying for the local call.

Hunt out skype.com and see if it helps.

Cheers,
Lindsay.

320614 2005-02-02 09:37:00 Well, I did it (my PC to overseas phone) about 6 or 7 years ago but I had a dog of a 166 Mhz PC and a slow connection so it was not reliable. Do a Google or go to CNET.com (downloads) and surely you will find PC to phone software. Strommer (42)

PJ, it has to connect somewhere into the UK telephone system. That's interconnection costs plus local call costs (or toll call costs) so someone has to pay, somewhere.

Different for PC to PC, as each party is already paying something anyway (your normal ISP fees) to get on the internet in the first place.

320616 2005-02-03 04:40:00 I did think it wouuld be wishful thinking. Thanks anyway. PJ Poppa John (284)
320617 2005-02-03 04:50:00 Skype (http://www.skype.com) might not be totally free, but it's said to be fairly cheap. They'd probably have a good distribution of dialing-out points in the UK. Graham L (2)
320618 2005-02-03 05:44:00 At something like 2c per minute on Skype (if I don't remember wrong), then it's definetely an option to look into. somebody (208)
