2005-02-01 23:40:00 | Last weekend we were wired up for saturn cable, (paradise account) at the lauded speed of 2mbs. However using Opera, which shows the download speed, I rarely get about 17kbs. I emailed paradise twice but as yet have no answer (they are having issues with hackers so they say, so it may not be personal). Anyway, How can I get my speed up? I run win98 - is there something to set in there? (like there was for 56K dialup) The modem (motorola surfboard) accessess the machine via the network card, which is quite old, brand unknown, possibly realtec. Would a faster machine actually help? Thanks for your replies :) PS: great to see the new board, its finally looking like something from the new century :)

2005-02-01 23:54:00 | This is odd. Maybe depends on what sites you have been to. Stuff comes in regularly from Symantec at 250 KBytes or so, and a few DLs this morning from elsewhere were at over 100K. Put up a URL of what you have as a slow place. Cheers T

2005-02-02 00:00:00 | Stuff.co.nz rocketed up to 17bps, but all pages are similar. Looking at the transfers, of which I have only down a couple, they are all under 20kbs. I know how fast a good connection is from a work machine, but there is no 'snap' just a feeling of a fast 56k.

2005-02-02 00:05:00 | Go to www.speedguide.net for stuff which will test your xfer speed and also provide files to tune up your MTU/RWin etc. | TonyF (246) | |
2005-02-02 00:14:00 | ooohhhh . . . . where is my 2mps??? Thanks for the link Tony, this is what I got . . . Test complete . Your connection took 70 . 36 second(s) to download a 500KB test file . Your current bandwidth is: 0 . 058 Mbps (58 kbps, 7 KBps) . (BTW should the motorola surfboard always have the "recieve" and "send" lights on . Are the lights an indication that you CAN recieve and send, or of actual recieving and sending . The only variety is the PC activity light that flickers, everything else is always on, except for standby) This was set up by the Saturn guys themselves, so I would expect it to work OK .

2005-02-02 01:14:00 | Looks like your system is indeed set slow. Ring up Saturn . long tedious process to get through to Tech help who can check what might be happening. Maybe you could consider a better card. BEst of luck ! T

2005-02-02 01:18:00 | My friends pc had this problem before. Maybe this will help. We went here: cable-dsl.home.att.net and added the registry key under "Increasing TCP Receive Window for Microsoft Windows" (one of the first tweaks) and everything worked sweet after that. Give that a go, hopefully it will work for you too. Dean.

2005-02-02 01:28:00 | Speedguide can reset your figs, or you can DL applications for your OS which will set optimum. But ring 0800/299300 for starters. Did Telstra install person actually show you a decent connect speed ? | TonyF (246) | |
2005-02-02 01:32:00 | Speedguide prog yielded MTU of 1500, RWin 256960 for my Win98SE. I thought the RWin sounded high but Juha Saarinen said it was right ! | TonyF (246) | |
2005-02-02 02:47:00 | Go up the Telstra food chain if you don't get service from the help desk, politely ask to speak to a supervisor or manager. 7 or even 56Kbs on your connection is not acceptable and can't see the speed tweakes making up the difference to 250+. | Murray P (44) | |
