320509 2005-02-01 19:46:00 Hi All,
I finally got my upgrade done so now I am running
P4 3.0Ghz LGA775 CPU
Asus P5P800 mobo
1GB Geil ddr 3200 ram
Gecube Radeon 9600pro 256mb Graphics card
high power 420w PSU

Due to budget constraints I have stuck with my old case which is just a budget unit but I have installed a 80cm fan in rear for exhaust and a 120 cm fan in front for intake. I have placed case on rubber matting (non slip mesh) from the warehouse to aid venting from underneath and I have cut a damn great hole in the rear of the desk so all the air flows straight out the back.....much to the wifes disgust. The PSU is a cheapie but has dual fan so also acts as an exhaust for the case.

Currently it is sitting at 44 degrees C but has jumped up to 60 C when playing games which does seem hot to me.

My question is what temp should the CPU be running at? I have tried searching online however I either find confusing charts from Intel or reviews on cooling for the CPU but nothing giving me a guideline as to what i should be running at.

I know a new case will help with temps but that is a bit further down the track.

320510 2005-02-01 20:09:00 Doesn't sound too bad to me - one of my PCs is an AMD Semphron (spelling?) which runs at idle at about 36 degrees and gets to about 56 degrees when pushed. johnd (85)
320511 2005-02-01 20:13:00 Thanks for that John however this is my first foray into Pentium after running AMD for the last 2 PC's.

I am aware that AMD runs a lot hotter than Pentium but I cannot seem to find any info on the new LGA775 CPU's which from all accounts are different to the standard Prescott units.

with 512mb ram running idle at 55 degrees and im too scared to see what it runs at when being pushed :yuck:

320513 2005-02-02 00:13:00 If a CPU gets too hot will it shut down as an auto protection?? Strommer (42)

I beleive that P4 cpu's do have a overheat failsafe but the temp setting for auto shutdown is in the mobo bios and I do not know what to set it at.

My P4 3.2Ghz sits at about 44C but when gaming goes up to around 70C at the moment but then the ambient air is quite hot now as well. In the cooler months it only gets up around 60C.
I suffer no stability issues which is usually the first sign of heat related problems.

320516 2005-02-02 05:31:00 The prescotts get quite hot. Read here (forums.anandtech.com) and see if you can see the poll. You will see it is a fairly average temp to have for that type of CPU. E|im (87)
320517 2005-02-02 06:17:00 Saw two identical comps built by the same outfit today
Both prescott 3.0
one idles at 52 and the other at 46
under load (prime 95) the first one reached 68
and the other 59-60
temps using mother board monitor
ambient temp around 23 degrees
both have coolermaster aluminium case and are reasonably well blown.

The hotter of the two runs noticeably snappier and feels more responsive
test was done on a fresh ghost reinstall on both.

Heh, kinda same with me. Except mine unless I use CoolerXP, mine idles at about ~ 65 degrees. When it hits 70 it does a kernal dump thing, then restarts. Zipping a file can be anough to crash it.
