320655 2005-02-03 08:46:00 I see you have no bites on the Opera Forum ! Murray suggests a Java problem, but I can't see how. Opera works happily on my 98SE, and it seems you are the first to raise this problem. Someone must be about to dive in and recommend Firefox ...

320656 2005-02-03 08:49:00 Seems like you could be narrowing it down NC.

I should'a thought of this before; Win 98 + SR1, or it SP 1, and various other updates? Along with spyware/adaware, what other things could be connecting or crippling your connection, can you give us a list of your running tasks?

320658 2005-02-03 19:06:00 Nothing nasty in there . You could get rid of a few things if you have a mind to .

ctfmon, if you don't use handwriting or voice recognition, language translation, etc, give it the chop . Disable in startup or uninstall .

mediakey, keyboard multi medai keys . If not used disable it .

mdm, machine debuger, which has a/is bug, ger . Disable in startup or uninstall .

Is Inoculate It antivirus back up and running as a viable company/programme, I thought it was shut down? Is it up to date .

Have you run Spybot, Adaware or similar?

What do your ZA logs say when you use Opera as opposed to IE, anthing stand out?

320659 2005-02-03 20:45:00 OMG I found the answer!!!!

It's OPERA!!!!

I just did it on scummy IE6 and got

Your line speed is approximately 1789.5 Kbps or 219.3 K bytes/sec

nearly fell off my chair...
I find that really weird. Opera beats the pants off IE and Firefox on my old Win98 box. Are you sure there isn't a program conflicting with Opera somehow? Such as a firewall, adblocker or something like that? Just a stab in the dark...

My Win 98's Java needs updating (currently on Version 1.4.2_04) and is enabled in Opera if a comparison of that may be of any help.
