320645 2005-02-03 03:25:00 Opera is set up exactly the same on both machines, the only difference is Win98 and XP.

I'll ask the opera guys whats up... and get back with the answer :)

320646 2005-02-03 03:28:00 OK. Now consider pulling in the files from Speedguide for your two OS, and setting it up.

320647 2005-02-03 03:59:00 Further. I cannot see any way in which a browser (Opera) can have an effect on the link speed. Maybe a Forum wizard will spring into action on this point.

Cheers Tony

320648 2005-02-03 05:22:00 It will be interesting to see . . . Here is my post in Opera Community . . .

Note that opera is less than a 1/4 the speed of IE . . .

. opera . com/forums/showthread . php?postid=822637#post822637" target="_blank">my . opera . com

This is an issue that has been bugging me and the techies for a while, its been resolved down to something in Opera .

Here goes . . . .
This site . jetstreamgames . co . nz/spe . . . ownload1MB . html" target="_blank">www . jetstreamgames . co . nz is the speed test used by the techs who look after my cable account .

On my desktop old truck under win98se I get this . . .

In scungy IE6 I get this . . .
Your line speed is approximately 1809 . 3 Kbps or 221 . 7 K bytes/sec

In Opera 7 . 54u1 all i get is this . . . .
Your line speed is approximately 425 . 7 Kbps or 52 . 2 K bytes/sec

This drives me nuts its almost as slow as dialup sometimes . Its less than 1/4 the speed of IE6!!!

Using the same line . . . .

On my WinXP laptop I get this . . . .

Opera
Your line speed is approximately 2006 . 9 Kbps or 225 . 9 K bytes/sec

IE6
Your line speed is approximately 2057 . 5 Kbps or 252 . 1 K bytes/sec

What does this tell me?

Scungy IE6 kicks ass! Especially on my win98 desktop .

What do I have to do to get Opera to run at least as equal as IE?
I had this issue earlier on dialup and totally removed Opera from my system and reinstalled it . I did this again with no change .

I have changed all the settings I could find and tested nothing made any difference .

320650 2005-02-03 06:57:00 Does Opera have the same or equivalent to; about:config in Firefox and Mozilla?

What happens if you try an ftp transaction rather than http?

320651 2005-02-03 07:14:00 Opera may report speed tests differently to IE or FF if java is involved.

Have you checked for spyware/adware, anybody know what Opera's ads can do if misconfigured or perhaps hijacked (assuming it's the ad version rather than paid)?

320652 2005-02-03 07:31:00 Murray says " Opera may report speed tests differently to IE or FF if java is involved" but I don't find this.
How can Java affect this ?
TonyF (246)
320653 2005-02-03 07:38:00 Does IE handle java in the same way as Opera, can you have some web pages load slower in one browser or the other or, from one server type to another, can one browser be just slower than another?

I think so, in fact I'm pretty sure . Off to google with me, or maybe I'll be a good boy and finish my report .

320654 2005-02-03 08:39:00 On the laptop, both IE and Opera achieve close to the same figures .

It must be something to do with Opera and Win98 . I did a clean install of opera on win98, even to the extent of manually cleaning out every opera entry in the registry before installing the latest stable version .

Both the old and the new opera install gave the same figures .

Its an interesting prediciment . . .
