320998 2005-02-03 01:13:00 I just bought a dvd-rw (Toshiba SD-R5372) and an usb2 external case (no name) for my laptop. I connected everything, I put the jumper to master position (as it was said in the case manual), it recognized immediately the device but the problem is that it doesn't even read any CD or DVD or anything at all from this drive. It says that the disk may be damaged or windows dont recognize this format. I tried putting the jumper to different positions but the problem persists. Any ideas???
Is the drive or the external case damaged?
Please help! :help: :(

320999 2005-02-03 01:19:00 I take it, you have USB 2 onboard?? or a PCI card.. What version of windows have u got??

And if USB 2 is onboard, is there a USB 2 option in the BIOS?? If so, is it enabled?

321000 2005-02-03 01:50:00 There is a possibility that the new drive is faulty. ;)

I'd guess that if it was a USB problem, the USB system would give error messages.

If you bought the two items at the same shop (or even if you didn't) they would probably have a computer they could try it out on. If you "bought them on the Internet" that's more of a problem. Try the drive in a desktop (or a firend's desktop).

321001 2005-02-03 03:19:00 I have a PCMCIA Card Bus with 2 USB 2 ports, windows xp home sp2. How can I enter the laptop's BIOS? I cant "Press Del to enter setup", I dont know if there is another key to enter there.
Well, I bought both from 2 different stores to get better prices. I m gonna pay them both a visit first thing tomorrow morning (sounds like fun), since there is no desktop availiable right now.
Thank a lot both of u guys!
I m going to let u know in any case...
Keep up the good work! Greetings from Greece!

321002 2005-02-03 03:29:00 You might have to press F2,F10 to get into the BIOS. I would also go into device manager. Do the usb hubs / entries say theyre OK. Speedy Gonzales (78)
321003 2005-02-04 03:06:00 Hi again, (HELP ME AGAIN :o )
It seems the probem was a cable inside the external case which they replace. I returned home and indeed it "worked" just fine. It recognized all cd and dvd I tried. So far so good, but when I tried to burn my first data dvd with nero 6.6 then it resulted (after an hour or so) to a coaster... Same thing with 3cds i tried afterwards. COASTERS!!!
What now!! Is it again a hardware issue??? :stare: :stare:
Should I use another software??
For the record, the settings for nero were always: the lowest writing speed, track-at-once, no multysession and the data to be writen were significantly lower from the data capacity of the medium.
I also did a firmware update for the drive.
Should i pay a visit again to the technicians?? (not so pleasant...)

321004 2005-02-04 03:48:00 I'm not sure what to advise . I first wondered about the media . Some drives just don't work with particular brands of disk, which might be plausible with DVDs but most of the problems with CDs should mostly gone, now that CDs are nearly obsolete . ;)

You should be aware that CD writable disks and drives are made to work in "bands" of speeds . You might not be able to write a X12 CD-RW disk on a X8 CD-RW writer, for example . The Linux cdrecord programme refused to write in this case for me .

There is a another, "silly", thing which has happened to me . :o Most CD writing software has a "dummy" mode . That does all the setup, and appears to write a CD . it takes the appropriate time . It loads the data, and checks that buffers aren't being emptied . The only thing it doesn't do is turn on the laser to do the write . :annoyed:
