You don't have to believe it if you don't want to, but the research and opinions of these two guys carry a lot of weight.

More info Here. (windowssecrets.com) (Make sure you scroll down to the second set of results for a perfomance comparison of paired programs).

320683 2005-02-02 05:32:00 Why isn't there anything that catches 100% of this stuff? vinref (6194)

320685 2005-02-02 06:16:00 Perhaps because there are perhaps thousands of people working to infect in new and more dazzeling ways?

there is no way a small group of programmers can keep ahead of em.

MS should really just fix their software though, rather then this revenue gathering off their faults.

Good, I'll give it a whirl once the major bugs are ironed out . Anything to help the cause has got to be good .

Question: Which combinations do you use to cover your bases, or at least the most serious malware? There are no overall figures, of what gets caught and what doesn't, that would enable a comparisom and informed choice of products .

320688 2005-02-02 06:46:00 I have the M/S anti spy ware and without fail adaware finds more after running MSSW,which nothing,so what can one say.
Don't rub it in Chill,we will join you once L becomes reasonably useful. ;)

No combination will catch all, just as no AV program can catch everything . The Black-Hat nasties mutate faster than the White-Hat programmers can keep up .

However, if you look at the second chart, it appears that MS/Giant +Ad-Aware SE is as good as you can hope for . In combination with SpyBot or any other one or two options of your choice you have covered as many bases as you can reasonably hope for . All credit to Giant though for their quality development .

The Linux, Mac and other alternative OS users had better hope and pray that MS never does get on top of their problems, because if they do, the bad guys' efforts will turn to their favourite OS(s) and because they haven't been seriously attacked before, I wouldn't mind betting they prove to be just about as vulnerable as Windows .

320691 2005-02-02 07:29:00 At least, if you have Linux/Nix user(s) set up properly the kernel won't get toasted by malware, programmes and user files could though if the evil eye casts that way. Murray P (44)
