321418 2005-02-04 06:57:00 I just bought a new harddrive for my PC and it contains no operating system on it. I have windows XP that i want to install, but am unable to because the computer will not auto-boot to the cd rom. how do i get the computer to boot from the cd rom to install windows? i have confirmed that the computer is reading the cd-rom FIRST upon bootup, through the bios. Can anyone help? The answer seems simple enough, i just cant figure this out...

thank you

321419 2005-02-04 06:59:00 Greetings Annihilatr,

Welcome to PressF1.

Is your BIOS set to Auto-Detect the CD-Rom/Hard Drives on Boot? It may be that the CDRom isnt actually configured in the BIOS.

Cheers

321420 2005-02-04 07:25:00 If you have confirmed that the BIOS settings are for the boot device to be the CDROM before the hard disk and nothing happens then (most likely) either:

1. the CDROM device or disk is damaged
2. or you bumped the IDE cable so that it isn't properly connected to the CDROM device when you installed the new hard drive.

You could (say) try to boot from a Win98 boot disk with CDROM support and see what happens -- or from a CDROM version of Linux such as Knoppix (but you might not have any of these?)

321421 2005-02-04 07:29:00 I presume (reading your post again) that the PC is attempting to boot? -- and that you haven't got your master/slave jumper settings wrong? johnd (85)

You say you have WinXP that you want to install.

All legal WinXP operating CDs that I have seen are bootable from the CD. I have seen other CDRom disks that are not boot disks. Usually copies of CDs that are not bootable.

Your BIOS seems to me to be set correctly. Should boot off the CD.

321423 2005-02-04 10:47:00 smart boot manager (btmgr.webframe.org)
will allow you to boot off floppy then boot off cdrom reguardless of bios restrictions

I run it off a boot floppy, My one reccomendation when using this boot manager READ THE DOCUMENTATION on the web site as there are some very important switches you need to be aware of when installing if you dont set the install up correctly you may end up with it installing some where other than you what
