| 321406 | 2005-02-05 08:55:00 | No, winxp not detect it by itself . I found this post in below from the net, had tryed it but Winxp still not detect it . I even reinstall the window . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew solved our problem! I am Steve ??? the originator of this thread . HP does make software for the 5100c that will work with XP . It is the software for the 5200c (with the USB patch) . Thanks to Andrew our problems are over . Andrew???s brilliant idea worked!! I now have HP Precision Scan software and copy utility again & the quality of photos is superb again . We all hated using the WIA generic scanning software that is included with XP . To make a copy w/o the copy utility means many steps ??? scan (several steps), save, open saved file, print, delete file . With the copy utility - just click one button & scanner & printer work like a copy machine . I also spent many hours trying to get the scanned photos to look like the original taken with my Nikon N70 . No luck . If I increased brightness or contrast -- the quality suffered in other areas . For years my scanned pix looked just like my photos . And this was using the exact same 5100c scanner & PrecisonScan Software with my old Windows 95 computer . With this awful generic software ??? same scanner & newer more powerful computer --they looked different/worse . So now, thanks to Andrew, I can scan as I did b4 I got a new computer with XP . Perfectly . For those who need more guidance here is exactly how I followed Andrew???s advice: I was still set up to use the WIA default/generic software that is part of Windows XP and did not do anything to delete it or disable it . Went to HP . hp . com/country/us/eng/software_drivers . htm" target="_blank">welcome . hp . com Entered 5200c in field Clicked Windows XP Found 5200c & clicked software D/L Under ???select one??? selected Microsoft Windows XP Clicked ScanJet 5200C/Cse/Cxi PrecisionScan software/driver 2001-12-12 2 . 02 55 . 38 MB D/L (saved to a folder) the huge file 55 . 38 MB sj662en . exe Did NOT reboot Went back & clicked ScanJet 6300c, 6200c and 5200c series USB Connectivity/Firmware Update 2002-05-28 1 . 0 100 . 00 KB D/L (saved to a folder) the small file 100KB sj630en . exe Now, I shut off computer & disconnected the scanner parallel cable at the scanner Booted up computer Found where I saved sj662en . exe & double clicked to install in a folder of my choosing Did NOT reboot Found where I saved sj630en . exe & double clicked to install . Shut off computer & reconnected the scanner parallel cable Booted up computer That???s it! I can launch HP PrecisionScan software from start/programs/HP??? Scanner green button still launches crappy WIA XP generic scanning software I made desktop shortcuts for both HP PrecisionScan & copy utility (rt . click & drag onto desktop from start/programs/HP???) Strangely, the HP ScanJet Button Manager disappeared from the list of apps the 1st time I clicked on it . I remember the green button never had worked well before & I often had to launch the software from a desktop shortcut or the start menu anyway . Final notes: During install, I chose ???parallel driver??? when asked and NOT ???USB driver??? even though it is recommended because, of course, we all have the 5100 model which does not have a USB connection even if our new XP computers have several ;-) I also chose ???Energy Star Compliant??? & not ???Fast Scan??? since I doubt our 5100 is capable of Fast Scan & I don???t need it ready all the time anyway . Hope this helps . Steve (PS can???t find user ID so had to re-register) |
