2005-02-03 16:49:00 | Hello I'm running XP SP2 on a ShuttleX 2400E. 6 months ago I bought the shuttleX which has a built in floppy drive and mutli card reader (Mitsumi Floppy + Card Reader supporting Flash Memory, Compact Flash, Micro Drive, SD, Multi Media, Memory Stick and Smart Media model number FA402A). At Christmas I was bought a digital camera (Canon Ixus 40i) which uses SD Memory cards and for a while the reader in my shuttle read it. However, a few weeks ago I D/L CCleaner. On downloading CCleaner I 1) cleaned and then 2) ran the 'issues' utliity which is where I think my problem began! I'm a newbie to this PC lark and I think when I ran the issues from CCleaner I might have inadvertantly 'done' something becuse soon after I ran it something has happened! Now when I first insert the SD card (the pc must have been rebooted) whilst the computer reads the card (in the directory tree it picks up the SD card as a canon...) it then freezes when trying to read the data (it will normally show 1 picture from the card and that's it) then when you try to click on the drive in the directory tree it comes up with the following message 'F:/ is not accessible The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error' This occurs on the 16MB SD Card that came with the camera and also the 1GB SD Card I've bought for it since. I've done some diging around on the net for drivers (I thought this might be the problem) but the manufacturers web site claims the reader uses generic MS drivers and in any event why did it work and has now stopped? The card reader was pre installed on the machine when I bought it and uses an internal USB connection on the motherboard (USB2.0 or baclward compatibile with USB1.1 and 1.0). On a different forum someone is suggesting that there may be corrupt data on the card - but is it possible this has happened on both? Could my over zealouse use of CCleaner broken a connection? Have I tweaked something within the operating system which has led to this or has the reader just broken? It's not the end of the world as the camera has a usb cable - just that if it has a built in reader I'd like to use it!! Any help gratefully received. Thanks for any help which is gratfeully received! Air-Wolf.

2005-02-03 19:15:00 | You could try deleting the reader in device manager. And reboot. (Under USB controllers - USB Mass Storage Device). Or open the case. and see if any of the USB cables have come off the mobo. That are going to the reader. I use an internal USB 2 card reader too, but an Apacer not a Mitsumi. The drivers for this came on CD, as well as the icons, for My computer, so it shows what slot is what (The icons show SD/CF/SM/MS) Or go to Device Manager / USB controllers. Nothing has an X or similar here, does it?? Does the floppy in it still work with no errors??

2005-02-03 19:30:00 | Does the camera work ok if you plug it directly into your USB port, try both cards? Have a look in Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager > for red discs or yellow exclamation marks next to the list of devices. If you have them, what are they? Yes you could have done something with CCleaner, or it may have done it all by itself. You need to be carefull with cleaners of any kind. Look in it's setting/options/preferences and make sure it's not set to automatically do anything without user input. Does this programme have a log file? Look through the programme itself or it's folder for a file which should be named something like log.txt or cleaner.log or similar. You might need to post the contents here if it isn't too big. Hopefully CCleaner has a backup and restore function, check it out. A useful site to got to with your USB troubles is USB Man (http://www.usbman.com/). Test your camera, then head off there for a bit of research.

2005-02-04 22:44:00 | Guys, Thanks very much for your comments but even having acted on them I'm still stumped. Device manager is shwoing that all three elemnts of the FDD are ok (the floppy, the compact flash and the SD etc (E: and F: respectivley). I have tried 'flashing' the firmware, updating the driver and all to no avail. The Floppy works ok, both SD cards work ok in the camera and using the USB cable I can downlaod images from the camera to the computer. But here is the really strange bit... ...When the PC is first turned on and I place a SD card in the slot the PC begins to read it (little light flashes on FDD momentarily) and as I've said before it shows up in 'my computer' etc - but if then I try to say format the card whilst it tries it can't complete and then if I remove that card and replace it with the other it just refuses to read it at all - then if I reboot the PC it does the same thing - initailly reads the card and then stops playing. It's like it wants to work and then gives up! But it's soooooooo frustrating! Any other suggestions? Cheers Air-Wolf

2005-02-04 23:40:00 | Perhaps a Windows thing then, which could mean anything. You could try deleting/uninstalling the readers drivers then, repairing windows by booting your XP CD and reload your motherboard drivers. Try the reader without installing it's drivers, then with. | Murray P (44) | |
2005-02-05 12:42:00 | Murray P, Thanks for the post mate - not sure i can be bothered to go to all of this effort!! The USB cable works fine. However, would it help if I was tpo crack open the shuttle case and just disconnect the thing and plug it back in - oh how much of a newbie do I sound now!!!
