321637 2005-02-04 21:30:00 I basically just use Word97 from this suite. Now, for some reason, clicking setup.exe on the install CD no longer works in the PC where it once worked.

Double-clicking setup.exe gives only a brief flicker of the text and that's all. Nothing opens.

The install cd is fine - I tried it on a different system and it worked as it should.

Tried uninstalling Office97 but problem remained, then went back to a previous Ghost. Got me beat. Any ideas much appreciated.

Thanks ~ John

321638 2005-02-04 22:22:00 Have you had it running on XP before? You could try changing the compatibility mode to something like Windows 98 or Windows 2000 and see if that makes a difference. Right click on setup.exe and click Properties, in the Properties window click the Compatibility tab, and tick "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows 98 or Windows 2000, click OK, and then retry running setup.

321639 2005-02-04 23:20:00 Thanks Mike. Yes, it previously installed ok in XP. Tried the compatibility settings but made no difference.

321640 2005-02-05 01:12:00 Do you have other versions of Office installed? If so, then there may be a conflict. I would recommend only installing one version of office, but if you require multiple versions then the earliest has to be installed first, then subsequent versions in order. Each will need to be installed in a separate folder. This would mean uninstalling other versions then going through this long process including installing SP's from each version.

Alternatively it may be that the uninstall didnt completely uninstall. See this KB article (support.microsoft.com).

If you think Office may still be installed it might simply need re-regsitering. First unregister by running this via Start|Run ensuring you change the path below to the folder where you have installed Off97...
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /unregserver

Next re-register...
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /regserver

You will need to include the quotes in the path like above if you have folders exceeding 8 characters in length to support long file names.

321641 2005-02-05 05:30:00 Thanks Parry. There's only one version of Office installed - Office97. I looked at the link you gave me. Unfortunately the Office97 Eraser mentioned in that article does not work in XP. I unregistered and reregistered Office/Word as you suggested. That worked but did not make any difference to the Install CD problem.

I also noticed XP's Add/Remove utility lists Microsoft Office but clicking Remove does nothing. No dialogs or other activity.

Very strange indeed.

321642 2005-02-05 07:20:00 Hi John, because of problems like this I have a separate uninstaller program that will clean up residue after the uninstall script has finished. Unfortunately either due to poorly coded uninstall routines or problems with the OS 'letting go' I found this a necessary evil. This doesnt help you now but you may wish to consider purchasing one.

OK, I would do a manual deletion. You will need to backup the registry so either search the FAQ here or search the main PCW area - somewhere theres a walkthru on backing up.

Presuming youve taken this precaution, manually delete the MSOffice folder but backup any templates you may have created (there may not be any). In the registry search for the word Office or Word and delete the sub folders relating to office. Im confident of doing this but you may not so you may wish to get a friend to assist as a wrong decision on deleting a folder may end in disaster. I had a quick search in Google for a walkthru but didnt see anything that was comprehensive.

321643 2005-02-07 06:20:00 Hi Parry - sorry to be so long getting back to you. After trying everything I knew, including stripping out all references to Office, Word etc from the registry, the problem still remained. I also used an alternative uninstaller called Ashampoo to, in theory anyway, strip out MS Office completely back to the pre-snapshot level.

Alas, something else must have gotten corrupted and I'm afraid I surrendered and installed an older Ghost image that did not have this problem. It meant having to reinstall quite a bit of stuff but at least now I don't have that niggling feeling of something not being quite right and not knowing why - at least until the next time :)

I've appreciated your help! Many thanks.
