321869 2005-02-05 20:30:00 Ok so my day just keeps getting better - in setting up my RAID 0 array I decided to back up everything I had to a 200GB hard drive, which filled the hard drive to the brim. Everything I have ever done on my PC is on that drive.

At some stage during my tinkering with the new, broken Promise Fasttrak, the partition on the drive seems to have disappeared. I believe this happened when I assigned the drive to a JBOD array of one disk (so that it would be recognised by an O/S).

I think the MBR has been wiped or overwritten :(

My question is what options I have in terms of data recovery - I have searched the forum, and other than people who were fed up with the question I found the obvious "send it to an expert", which I cannot afford.

I have put the drive on the new controller, with a JBOD array (consisting of itself) and put that in another PC, with a fresh install of windows on a second hard drive. I haven't touched the need-recovery-drive at all.

I have read of programs that help, but do not want to download lots of things without being sure of their exact use - for example, i need as many files of various types recovered and not specifically text or .pst (although that would be fantastic too.) - but in short, I need my data back and am not sure of how to go about it.

If there is anyone, ANYONE, who can help me here I would be truly greatful!!!!!!!!

321872 2005-02-05 22:31:00 a copy of "lost and found" might cost $30 but it works for me. robsonde (120)
321873 2005-02-05 22:59:00 I had the same problem with a drive, and I used FileScavenger (although not free, getting it freely is not too hard) ;)

Worked great and I got most of my stuff back - though a few files were corrupted (I think this was a hardware problem though)

321874 2005-02-06 04:35:00 Thanks so much,

Now all I need is to choose the best one - anyone know of any bad things / problems in the past with anything suggested here? I'm searching for FileScavenger (... to buy) and downloading the rest as we speak.

By running any of these, am I forfitting future recoverability of anything they do not find?

321875 2005-02-06 04:45:00 Dunno i've you've got another drive the same size or bigger or the chance to borrow one but you could either image the damaged one or copy the files to the other as they are recovered.

if you've merely wiped or corrupted to MBR then it shouldn't be too much trouble.

You could also try Steve Gibson's Spinrite
PM if you you need some "help" with this ;-)

321876 2005-02-06 05:37:00 The hard drive is in perfect condition so SpinRite won't be necessary :D

However, this file scavenger has found pretty much everything so far, so...

I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!

321877 2005-02-06 10:26:00 http://insert.cd

Download INSERT Rescue CD - Because its a LiveCD you'll not be overwriting anything on the HDD.

There are data recovery tools on there IIRC. gPart is a good Partition Recovery Tool which has worked on many occasions for me when Ive accidentally killed the wrong partition.

Cheers

Chill.
