322429 2005-02-07 07:34:00 Hi. This is proberbly something relatively easy, however I'm fairly new at it and struggling.
I'm wanting to network my computer with another using a crossover cable, mainly for network gaming, I know it can be done as someone else has set one up using my computer and another using a crossover.
If it makes any difference, the computers are an Athlon and a Celeron, both running XP Home and SP2.
Thanks in advance for any help
Cheers

322430 2005-02-07 07:42:00 Just network the 2 give one 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.02 under their LAN icons which appear on the taskbar. (under properties / TCP/IP use the following ip address)

On 192.168.0.2's LAN icon properties /TCP/IP put in subnet 255.255.255.0
and default gateway 192.168.0.1. And use the following DNS server address type in 192.168.0.1.

Thats it, if u want to share files, just enable file sharing on both under the LAN icon / properties as well. And make a folder and share it. Also make sure the workgroup is the same name on both.

322432 2005-02-09 21:15:00 Hiya, from computer not showing icon in taskbar, go to Start>Connect to>Show all connection, from there right click on the LAN connection, and go to properties. On the 1st Tab (general) place a tick in the box for 'show icon in notification area when connected', and click okay. SolMiester (139)
322433 2005-02-09 22:25:00 also ensure both pc s are in the same work group and do you use a firewall beama (111)
322434 2005-02-10 02:45:00 The easiest way is to:
1) Plug in the crossover cable
2) Use Windows XP's "Set up a Home or Small Office Network" utility.

Thats if u wanna be there all year. XP's network wizard is crap

Easier doing it under the lan icons.

322436 2005-02-10 21:23:00 Cheers peoples for the help so far...
Both computers are connected now.
NEXT
I've turned off the Firewalls on both computers and tried hosting a game on one computer, however the other computer doesnt detect the hosted game.
I've tried doing it both ways, trying both computers hosting, but nothing works.
I'm assuming there are some more network settings I have to play with, clues anyone?
Cheers

322437 2005-02-11 00:02:00 On one of the PC's go to Start - Run and type in cmd and click OK
At the DOS prompt type: ping 192.168.0.1 and press enter.
When that finished type: ping 192.168.0.2 and press enter.
You should see 4 replies from both of those commands.
If not then you need to double check you network settings.
