322105 2005-02-06 21:58:00 Hi Guys,
My dear old Giga-Byte VT82C693/A is hankering for more than a 10 Gigger .
We hear that 80 might not be supported but 40 might be the go...
How do I find out please?
tried a few searches to no avail...

Any clues please ? :)

322106 2005-02-06 22:11:00 Try the gigabyte site .

A BIOS update from the site might fix the hdd limit problem (if it has 1) .

Check the BIOS . Has it got an LBA option, under the hdd primary/secondary entries? If there's no update that fixes the hdd limit, you'll have to buy another motherboard that can support bigger hard drives .

322107 2005-02-06 22:24:00 IT'S probably irrelevant what your mobo supposedly supports.........virtually every hdd maker has a downloadable 'DDO' (dynamic drive overlay) program available free from their website which will 'fool' the bios into accepting virtually any harddrive ....... drcspy (146)
322108 2005-02-06 22:45:00 Might be best to use DDO as a last resort. Althoigh I haven't used it, I have heard it can cause problems.

What OS are you using, win 95 has a limit of 32GB drives while 98 and ME may need patching over 32GB for scandisk to work properly.

322109 2005-02-07 02:12:00 "i have heard it can cause problems" ......hmm........really ?..........I've used it quite a few times and the manufacturers sites certainly dont suggest you use it "as a last resort" Just for future reference i'd be most interested to have some detail about the possible probs it can cause ? drcspy (146)
322110 2005-02-07 04:41:00 VT82C693 would be the model number of the North Bridge .

Please give the actual motherboard model so we can help you better .

Can't remember the detail, sorry. I'd heard it on this forum, in a discussion long ago, it was posted in response to a question, by one of our more illustrious members (who I don't want to guess at which one out of about three candidates), it seemed very plausible at the time. In the meanitme I'll try a search of the old board to refresh my memory.

322112 2005-02-07 06:42:00 Here ( . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=23613&highlight=drive+overlay" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz) and here ( . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=27887&highlight=drive+overlay" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz) . Except they don't seem to address the dangers of DDO precisely as I remember it .

The upshot is, if you can avoid add software to a critical function by updating your firmware, do so .

Does that sound plausible :D

322113 2005-02-07 09:08:00 You may want to try a PCI card (www.dse.co.nz) to allow larger hard drives than your mobo supports. Antmannz (6583)
