322014 2005-02-06 07:12:00 Op system is Win 2000 Pro.

I finally decided to install service pak 4 and everything went well except that now I have no internet connection.

It actually connects initially and receives 700 odd bytes and sends around 500 odd but nothing happens after that.

The modem,an external one, is detected OK and control panel shows that all is OK from a diagnostic point of view. Another comuter in the house has no problems.

I looked in the account setting in IE and all looks OK there.

Of course I have the option of deleting SP4 but can't see the point in that.

So... who has some ideas to try?

322016 2005-02-06 08:31:00 was it a clean install? or was it just installed over top?

[edit]you could try fixing your winsock settings, try this (www.spychecker.com) i have had that program running on win98 even though it says its for xp.

322017 2005-02-06 09:35:00 I'd start with the simple things first.

Have you checked your settings in Dial Up networking? Your ISP's phone number may be absent or some other setting may be wrong. If in doubt, compare with your working computer.

If DUN doesn't even show a setting for your ISP in the initial properties box then that's your problem.

322019 2005-02-06 18:29:00 Your ISP's phone number may be absent . . . . . . . . . and ah . . . . . . . . . hows it conencting then . . . . . try a Ie repair . . . . . . . .

Sometimes you can get the impression it is connecting but it isn't, especially if the modem speaker is muted . It may not be dialing out so I was just covering the simple bases first .

I have experienced this problem myself, but I have not experienced an IE failure preventing data transfer once connected .

322020 2005-02-06 18:36:00 Yup, I know Norton's firewall stops it. Its proxy service, likes stopping when it feels like it, and this also stops you browsing. BUT you can connect a OK.

It could also be a worm that will stop u from browsing as this if u have a firewall installed, will also shut a firewall down. And byebye browsing.

I would do a scan for viruses etc.

322021 2005-02-07 06:07:00 Speedy, right on track.

T'was Agnitum firewall that was the guilty party and I had followed the SP4 instructions by disenabling both the firewall and virus detection before proceeding. Well yah just don't know wot will happen in any given circumstance.

But hey, thanks, again, for the assistance.
