321936 2005-02-06 03:30:00 Anyone point me in the right direction on this one?

I was given this External Voice/Fax/Modem .
It installed no problem at all and was recognised by WinME as a Rockwell DPF PnP connect to Com2 .
Fine so far, but when I try to connect to either Xtra or ClearNet it dials up, waits, goes to password and then a Error: 650 message appears .

I’ve removed all modems, reinstalled, no go . Deleted and set up new dialup connections to both ISP’s but same thing .

The help desks at both ISP’s couldn’t and a Google didn’t come up with anything that rung a bell .

The only thing I can think of is that it’s a V . 34/56kflex, which is different to any others I’ve used . I’ve heard that the Kflex protocol can present problems but have no idea what sort .

Anyone any ideas?

321937 2005-02-06 08:46:00 But does it really "dial-up"?

Can you hear the ISP modem pool answer, and any exchange of tones? Listen on a phone to make sure?

321938 2005-02-06 09:35:00 Yes GF I’m pretty sure it is dialling and trying to “shake hands” but to no avail.

Put it this way, what I hear on the telephone is almost the same as what I hear on the Modem Speaker.

Pity I can’t understand their lingo and it’s probably just as well they can’t understand mine! :)

A mate said he thought it may be necessary with some of these older kflex modems to type an additional instruction in: Dial up Networking / Properties / General- Configure / Connection / Advanced / Extra Settings. Unfortunately he couldn’t remember what or why. :(

Certainly is another odd one.

321939 2005-02-06 12:30:00 Have you read this ms kb article (support.microsoft.com)

i.e you have to use safe mode.

otherwise you might want to try some drives from the maker rather than those supplied with windows me. (or maybe the modem is faulty).

321942 2005-02-06 16:41:00 I would try some other drivers. I had to try several diff drivers for my external modem with XP before I found one that would work consistently. sam m (517)
321943 2005-02-06 18:51:00 Well done guys, another howling success! :D

As a mater of interest the Microsoft site described the problem exactly, but the “Resolution” was anything but helpful . However, the “Modem Help” site got right to the nitty gritty and it was the renaming of the “telephon . ini” file and running off “tapiini . exe” that did the trick .

Thanks again everyone .
