322314 2006-04-20 10:19:00 Seems to me the chap is asking where the # is,not what the # is.

If that is the case I expect red faces all round.
I think you are somewhat right, Cicero. The bloke said We need serial number xp professional, verson is 2002. If we put a comma between the word number and xp, it will be we need serial number, (the OS of the computer is) XP professional, version 2002. I didn't mean to pick on anyone in particular, just to clarify.

Cheers :)

Heh, this could be true I guess. But the cynical side of me, thinks it was just a straight serialz request.

It can be difficult to interpret such requests. I can a email from someone that I swear was talking about a Mac, got arms with some mac tools, but only to arrive and discover it was a PC.

The banned poster will be back if it was all a misunderstanding.... :D

322316 2006-04-21 02:10:00 there is always a cd key in the "unattend.txt" file on your cd . i did that once but i not sure if it would work. it did for me but that was a cd made by HP to restore the pc. i do have a program that tells if a XP Pro cd key is valid but the legallity of this program is questionable. aidanmaz (7180)

If that is the case I expect red faces all round. It's over Pavlova. The guy who revived this thread was blatantly asking for an illegitimate serial. Anyone who thinks otherwise is, well... [profanity removed].

On the english front James, you should not use the expression "somewhat right". Somewhat has somewhat of an air of vagueness about it, whereas "right" is definitive.

If you had doubts about Cicero's comment, you would have been better to have said: "probably right". You may be somewhat surprised to find that this distinction exists and you may also think me somewhat of a pedant for pointing it out. If so, you are probably correct.

322319 2006-04-21 02:47:00 I would imagine that only the OEM CDs would have the serial on the CD - there would be too much room for abuse if it was on every XP CD. Greven (91)
322320 2006-04-21 02:56:00 well every XP cd i have ever had , (OEM, retail, VLK) has had it in the unattend.txt. maybe its just well known so its not a huge threat...yet have a look at your cd, at the very bottom of the unattend.txt. it also differs to the one on the sticker. aidanmaz (7180)

That is very interesting. I wonder why they did that?

322322 2006-04-21 03:37:00 I think it was meant for System Administrators. either way its there now. Kinda stupid i think aidanmaz (7180)
322323 2006-04-21 04:26:00 The product key in the "unattend.txt" file is a generic key to allow installation, they are also published on the web.

But they are blocked from activation.
