321964 2005-02-07 02:50:00 Indeed, Tried a few, made a few, Its subjective to a point anyhow so opinons will vary.

Then we have the Metla acid test of playing them on my old boys projector.........

321965 2005-02-07 02:53:00 BS :annoyed: I also use a large monitor (and have used a tv) with a full 5.1 setup...

It sure beats 4.7+GB per movie and there is not really a noticeable difference if you encode at the proper resolution with high bitrates...

Maybe you should put in some more practice?

Right, whatever you say champ, heavy compression has no effect on quality.

Honestly,if your happy with it then thats excellent, Good for you.

321966 2005-02-07 03:04:00 It's more about being sensible than happy - unless you've hundreds of gigabytes of storage - compression is a must - especially when your dealing with a whole collection - obviously no compression is better but would the majority of untrained eyes notice the difference? NO. HadO (796)
321967 2005-02-07 15:42:00 Something to throw into the mix,Anyone know of a good TV card(with UHF-naturally)and also a suitable(or possible)Media Centre-type program to run things with.And lastly,which swappable HDD option is better-USB or regular old swap-a-caddy???? B B (6979)
321968 2005-02-07 19:11:00 Leedtek Winfast 2000 TV card is fantastic, and the software allows time-shifting, pitcure in pitcure, and heaps more. Rob99 (151)
321969 2005-02-08 02:39:00 Yeah go for a Leadtek Winfast TV2000XP Expert - I have the Deluxe but would highly recommend the Expert model as it has native support for NiCAM TV sound...

The caddy system is good but is NOT hot swappable (you have to power down the system to remove/swap drives) - USB drives can just be stopped and disconnected without powering down the system... I've never used a USB HDD so I can't really comment but DONT get a USB 1.1 drive (if they still make them?).

321970 2005-02-08 02:47:00 Its all defined by the Caddy for the USB HDD's.

USB2.0 is un-noticeable in speed difference from a normal HDD.

You should be fine with it, they're great!

321971 2005-02-09 12:29:00 If you rip DVD to SVCD they are just over 700Mb in size, some movies require you to split them in two as they are too large, but the software will do this for you.

What case are you getting? Some of the desktop flat styles have a built in PSU with a low rating, meaning you cant run the fastest CPU's properly.
Got 400w psu, figure that enough for most magic bits.

321972 2005-02-09 12:33:00 It just occured to me that Lo may have been referring to mpeg2 using the mp3 format for audio which as i understand it is quite correct.

As to the others,a 1200mb movie is hidiously ugly.

But then,I value quality over storage space....and i watch em on my tv with my 5.1 setup, not on a comp screen.
I plan to play back on 43in Sony rear projection TV :D
