322374 2005-02-08 06:35:00 You cannot network the HL1430 without the canon network adapter for that printer (about $299 from Canon). The printer relies on using the host computer's memory and CPU and will not work using the DSE or any other USB print server - that's actually how they manage to sell that printer for such a ridiculously low price. andy (473)
322375 2005-02-08 19:41:00 I have a HL1430 networked fine with a HP networked print server box at home.. paulw (1826)
322376 2005-02-13 23:34:00 I wish I saw this thread earlier.

I am currently trying out the DSE USB Print Server XH7601, with a Brother HL-1440 Printer (must admit, worse laser printer I've ever had).

Now for some reason the USB Print Server thinks the printer goes offline, I am wondering whether it's the sleep mode the printer has or whether it's a signal sent from the Printer to the Print Server.

It's wasted quite a lot of paper and toner and it's only been the first week using this.

I think it's best to try the Parallel Print Server, 3 times the price but more than likely will work, unless the Parallel Specifications lets the user know whether the printer is offline or online? If not, then it's bound to send the signal straight through without a hitch, unfortunately if the USB Printer Server finds the printer offline, it doesn't attempt to wake it up.

I just got to see if it's OK to go ahead with returning this USB Print Server and getting the Parallel Print Server, because so far I'm just going on a hunch.

The printer use to be shared, but it would not work correctly, so it quite possibly could be the printer itself.

If it's possible to use Parallel on one computer and USB on the other, then I'll will try that, as it seems only Local Printing works for this printer.

322377 2005-02-17 11:22:00 Just an update on the printer situation.

The Brother Laser printers and possibly others can run USB and Parallel simultaneously, no conflicts between printing at the same time as I tested printing 3 pages at the same time on many computers on the network (4 if you want numbers), and it seems the printer queue was correct, First in, first served. (USB on one computer, Parallel Printer Server linked to a HUB over the networked computers)

Also the Parallel print server works off the network better than USB due to it's lack of knowing the printers status as well as the fact that the USB print server doesn't seem to be capable of printing a large number of pages without the USB somehow telling that the printer is offline or lack of power???, even if it had just printed. Although 3 times the price, the parallel print server I would guarantee better compatibility and well worth networking a printer that lacks networkability.
