322611 2005-02-07 23:49:00 Occasionally on startup, my computer locks just before the desktop icons are due to appear. The only way to get it going is to restart, at which time the screen comes up correctly. Randolf (75)
322612 2005-02-08 00:14:00 What programmes do you have starting with Windows, it's quiet likely one (or more) is a bit of a resource hog and is stalling the PC, go, Start > Run > type msconfig into the text box then click OK or hit Enter > go to the Start Up tab in the resulting window and list here what are ticked as start up items .

If you leave it for 10 minutes or so, will it start? How much RAM do you have?

It could also be caused by a driver, startup software or Windows conflict, or by spyware or virus activity . or even an intermittent hardware fault .

Could also be your Icon cache, but I'm not sure how 98 handles this or even if it can have a problem with it like Win2k or XP

322613 2005-02-08 00:50:00 I had previously audited my startup list, and whittled it down to this:
Spybot SD teatimer,
Scan Registry,
Task monitor,
Load power profile (2),
Atigart,
Ati PTA,
Nod32 kui
Zonelabs client,
True Vector (Zonelabs),
Nod32 kernel,
Office startup (still checked in Msconfig, but shown as disabled in details, I did this with the "Spydot SD utility).

I have waited for about 4/5 minutes - not as long as 10.

384 mb of ram.

The ATI has some influence in desktop management, but might not be related to current query.

322614 2005-02-08 01:03:00 The Scan Registry, should be on demand should it not . Yes dump, OSA .

All else looks fine and you have enough RAM .

Do a scan for malware and viruses . Clean up in general then see how it goes .

Is there a start up log in 98?

Active Desktop/IE could be another issue you could explore .

322615 2005-02-08 19:21:00 Will try above. Can't see a Startup log. No malware/viruses. Active desktop is off.

Doing some 'net search, I see that loading a new programme can sometimes trigger this. It started straight after loading the trial version of Nod32 AV system - may be coincidental. Also, what about closing the ShellIconCache file and letting it rebuild? Bit hesitant to do this.

322616 2005-02-09 04:37:00 It could be likely that Nod32 is causing this problem if it only started after you installed it. Try removing all references to it from your startup list and also check to see if there is an option within Nod32 to stop it loading on startup. If your machine loads fine after that, then you might want to try out a different AV. :) Jen (38)
322617 2005-02-09 07:37:00 Rebuild the icon cache anyway.

As Jen says, disable Nod32. I use Nod, it's pretty light handed for an AV programme but a straight out conflict wouldn't be out of the question. If it is Nod, check out the website for windows/win98 glitches or email them. Do all this separately from the icon cache thing or whatever else you try so that the diagnosis is not confused by other possibilities.

322618 2005-02-09 08:26:00 the other thing you can do is increase the size of the icon cache.

cacheman is a handy tool forr adjusting those settings.
