322547 2005-02-07 19:38:00 Hi

I have a computer running windows XP that will not read CDs or DVDs.

If I boot i safe mode I can read disks fine but not normal mode. Also if the cd is in the drive when the PC boots I can read it.

Have tried reinstalling SP2 and removed all startup objects using msconfig but still no joy.

Any Ideas?

322548 2005-02-07 21:32:00 Sounds like it could be the IDE drivers for the mainboard.
Try reinstalling the drivers for your mainboards chipset, either Intel, VIA or SIS.
Drivers are available from their websites.

322549 2005-02-08 01:12:00 I tried reinstalling the drivers but still no go.
When I put a cd in the drive windows does not detect the name of the CD, and when I explore the cd I get a blank screen.

322551 2005-02-08 02:06:00 See if the BIOS (if it can) detects the cdrom... If this is a pretty recent mobo. It shouldnt need cd rom drivers if this is the case. Speedy Gonzales (78)
322552 2005-02-08 02:08:00 sounds to me like the 'aspi' layer thingy is stuffed up in your pc...........you could try here >>> www.nu2.nu drcspy (146)
322553 2005-02-08 02:20:00 Aspi is only really used for burning. And usually XP doesnt need them. I know I havent installed the aspi drivers from Adaptec. BOTH burners work fine. Speedy Gonzales (78)
322554 2005-02-08 02:35:00 yeh but I've seen a situation where xp woulnd't even show the cd drives in windoze and a reinstall of the aspi layer fixed it....... drcspy (146)
322555 2005-02-08 03:01:00 Is the IDE cable inside the computer plugged in properly?

Next thing could be the drive malfunctioning.

Must be a pretty strange cd for you to install ASPI. If the BIOS doesnt see the cd rom first, neither will windows, when u get into it.

Well its not exactly a reinstall, since ASPI isnt installed on XP, in the first place. Nero installs its own ASPI driver. Thats the only ASPI, I have on this. BUT even if I didnt have Nero, it wouldnt stop the burners from working.
