| 322493 | 2005-02-07 10:16:00 | Firstly, yesterday I downloaded the full version of AVG 7 free and installed it this morning.I subsequently sent myself an e-mail which was transmitted and received without a hitch (I use Eudora client which AVG 7 is said to be directly compatible). In view of the number of problems and complaints about the new version that appeared in this forum about a month ago, hopefully some gremlins have now been found and fixed. For anyone wishing to use AVG 7 with Win 95, during installation it expresses a need for Dcom95 if it is not present, and provides a download link. This link downloads a file called Dc95Inst.exe for which the instructions say that running it decompresses some files into Windows\Temp. What they don't say is that after running this file it is necessary to run dcom95.exe which is decompressed into a folder called something like X86 in Windows\temp. It is the latter file which actually installs Dcom95. Tip 1: a message during the installation of AVG 7 recommends using Standard Setup, but this provides no opportunity to specify a non-default drive or folder for those who wish to do so. Custom Setup does have this option, and is very simple and straightforward; it includes an Advanced button for those who want to twiddle. Tip 2: to set up a Desktop shortcut to AVG 7 it needs to be to avgcc.exe (which loads the Control Centre) - not to avg.exe as one might expect. |
