322689 2005-02-08 08:40:00 our internet connection seems to have been hijacked by spybots and adware.
We have totally wiped and done a fresh installl of windows today and within half an hour of reconnecting to the internet Adaware detected over 100 spybots/adware!
Winpatrol keeps coming up telling me something called navprotect.exe wants to join my startup menu. I did a search and deleted but it came straight back up, surprise surprise
help if you can please
(win xp)

322690 2005-02-08 08:49:00 hey there
run spybot (security.kolla.de/)and adaware (http:). to delete navprotect.exe try hijack this (www.spychecker.com) and do you have a antivirus program? if not get AVG (http://www.grisoft.com)

322691 2005-02-08 08:53:00 First of all, have you got a firewall installed? At a minimum, you should make sure XP's inbuilt firewall is activated for the time being. What Antivirus program do you have and have you updated it? Jen (38)
322692 2005-02-08 08:55:00 we have avg, unfortunately it was a while before we could download the updates and get it running, just about to do a scan
have used both spybot, adaware, noadware today and deleted the things it found

322693 2005-02-08 08:58:00 make sure they are all up to date otherwise they are useless. if you dont have a firewall i recommend you use Zonealarm (http://www.zonelabs.com), its free too :) Prescott (11)
322694 2005-02-08 09:08:00 yes they are all up to date

I am surprised the xp firewall doesn't automaticallly come on when you install windows xp! have remedied that now

avg has detected 7 viruses already

will try the zone alarm thanx for that

322695 2005-02-08 09:23:00 Where are you getting all the viruses from, and what were they. How did you manage to get so many so fast. Safari (3993)
322696 2005-02-08 09:36:00 I wish I knew
we are under attack!

have just run trend sysclean but it only found one called worm-wootbot.er

i'll try the hijack program now

322697 2005-02-08 10:05:00 we have avg, unfortunately it was a while before we could download the updates and get it running, just about to do a scan

I would suggest you remove noadware as there are many reports like this one of if being ineffective.

NoAdware is a controversial product. It is heavily advertised on the internet as an effective adware removal tool. Our tests indicate differently however. We uncovered a product that was unable to detect real adware on our computer, and instead tried to fool us with "false positives". Unfortunately, some of the adware programs it claimed to detect were actually operating system files and legitimate software,

322698 2005-02-08 10:07:00 Well I would start from scratch again.

Download the latest AVG and SP2, burn them to a disk if you can.

Format and reinstall a fresh, before you connect up make sure you have applied SP2, and have a fire wall running.

I would not normally say format and go again but you say you did this fresh today and got infected straight away, so while it's working grab all the software you need so you will be fully protected when you start again.

[Edit]It will take an hour or two to set up again, but many more hours to fix the problems you are reporting.
