322640 2005-02-08 01:49:00 Gidday Team,

Could someone please advise?

I was always under the impression that it was illegal to sell a PC or Laptop without an OS?

Was this ever the case?

A friend has recently purchased a Laptop from DSE without an OS and i thought it all sounded a bit dodgy?!

Cheers
Curious.

322641 2005-02-08 01:58:00 Nope I wouldnt say thats illegal. It would have said there's no OS on it instore, before your mate brought it. I have seen it before on their site and instore. It was most probably cheaper, than it would be if it had an OS installed on it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
322642 2005-02-08 02:01:00 not a legal requirement to have an operating system installed on a pc/lappy when sold.....sometimes pc's are sold without a harddrive......kinda hard to install an o/s on a system that lacks a harddrive.......what if the buyer didn't want the 'ubiquitous' microcrap operating system and preferred linux....the seller would be limiting their sales targets by insisting that the pc comes with windoze preinstalled.......... drcspy (146)
322643 2005-02-08 02:10:00 Sounds like they've drummed some BS into your head during those MS courses that you've done. There is nothing wrong with selling a computer without an OS, it can be beneficial if you're planning on running Linux/BSD/etc or if you have already purchased a Windows licence to run on the PC. 322644 2005-02-08 02:13:00 <hobby horse> When you purchase a audio CD stereo system nobody insists that you have to purchase (included in the price) a set of Barry Manilow CDs. </gets off>

Maybe the only time this has to happen (with PC hardware and MS OSs) is when the retailer has made an agreement with MS to sell all gear with an MS OS installed. One would have to ask if this is anti-competitive and should it be allowed?

Yes, wo betide the system builder who sells anything other than an MS OS bundled with their PC, no more MS product for them.

And in some circumstances the box has to have an Intel Inside as well or perhaps that should read as dell. Mind you, Dell could be softening on the alt CPU front with regard to servers.

But, that's all contractural stuff, and very dubious at that. Nothing illegal about it.

322646 2005-02-08 02:24:00 I believe a lot of retailers that have OEM agreements are required by MS to include an installed OS on any complete machine they sell.

Could be wrong.

322647 2005-02-08 02:37:00 damn that sounds anticompetitive and greedy of ms indeed drcspy (146)
322648 2005-02-08 02:41:00 I actually would prefer a system without an OS, as mentioned its great for running an Open OS on it.

Clevo are great at this too :)
