Ive only got a laymans understanding but I believe a hook is how your connecting to an object. They are used for Windows API calls where your accessing a DLL or some other code library to pass instructions to alter the windows environment. In this case, the mouse.

I'm trying a security app called ProcessGuard, which can block or allow global hooks.
