323015 2005-02-09 11:15:00 Hi

I have switched to Xtra and notice that I get 'Resolving blablabla address' a lot when clicking links. There are also many times when it just comes up that the url cannot be found. If I change the DNS server settings in my router back to Orcon's servers it seems better.

What do you lot use?

Out or curiosity, Are your gaming pings any better with the switch over to hellspawn....I mean Xtra?

323017 2005-02-09 13:52:00 Xtra has seemingly had issues with its DNS servers for a very long time.
When I was on Xtra Jetsteam I used Paradise's DNS servers, after getting sick of long resolve times (to be fair they aren't all the time).

Now on Orcon (apart from other issues) - I just use their DNS servers. Though I think a flatmate has a DNS server on the LAN somewhere

Yes, dancing withthe devil indeed, but it was the best thing I have done.

I had anywhere between 150 - 400 ping with Orcon to NZ Battlefield 1942 servers. The best I have ever had it with Orcon 256, UBS or pre UBS was around 80, but since the latter part of last year it was never that low for any extended period.

With Xtra now, my ping is 45 - 55, and steady. I can play online with the kids on the other PC at the same time, and in game both of us pings around 50.

Incidentally, leaving Orcon is akin to getting away from Amway, or leaving the Navy. They keep saying I haven't given them notice of wanting to finish up with them, despite repeated emails. Now they are getting snarky because I wont pay next month's charges, and I note on their customer care site my services include Bitstream ADSL, which I cannot connect to now.

323019 2005-02-09 21:02:00 Xtra's DNS servers are crufty. Just use any of the major ISP's name servers in place. Paradise/Clear/Orcon/Actrix/iHug (though I think iHug restrict access). ninja (1671)
323020 2005-02-09 21:27:00 I always use one from one ISP and one from another just so if one has problems then you always have the other. Ash M (46)
