323420 2005-02-10 04:51:00 If they are just sending Word documents as attachments, perhaps they are a bit green and don't really know what you mean by blank emails ... after all they did send the Word document so it isn't blank. Did you explain specifically what the subject heading and body message was to them, and why you require it?

If they are just being difficult, and you don't really need to see their attached Word document, then just do as you suggested and reply back with what looks like an automatic generated message about this email has been deleted due to no subject heading etc. If the document is work related and you actually do need to read it, and they refuse to change their style, then there probably isn't much you can do about it.

323421 2005-02-10 07:26:00 Who is sending the messages? A great-aunt? friend? work collegue?...

I have had troubles with elderly relatives sending pics straight off the camera to my parents who then forward them to me. Great. Everytime it happens I send off a very nice email explaining to them how to reduce their photos in size before sending. It worked. They've all stopped sending ANY photo now :D

I've given up on an aunt. These days I convert her wps file to rtf, forward the new version on - and attempt to teach the family how to install a Works convertor into Word.

323422 2005-02-10 17:02:00 Depends on what is in the Word attachment. I send and receive lots of such posts every day.
Why waste time writing accompanying letters? The senders name should be enough, and I don't read "subject " lines anyway.
I trust my AV software. :D

This is the point: if you know the person and the attachments are worthwhile, then what is the problem?

Otherwise just send them a polite "form letter'" stating that all attachments without a subject line and explanation in the body of the letter are automatically deleted.

323424 2005-02-11 00:54:00 This is the point: if you know the person and the attachments are worthwhile, then what is the problem? The information is being sent in a proprietary format that has the ability to contain malicious executable code. It requires software that not everyone has immediate access to for the content to be viewed.

9 times out of 10 content included in a document attachment could be easily reproduced in the body of a message.

www.gnu.org

However the author's premise that user's of OpenSource OSs cannot easily read MS Word is a little out of date (OpenOffice and AbiWord).

The bottom of the article has some suggested responses to people who persist in sending Word attachments.

323427 2005-02-12 01:11:00 Maybe they just don't realise what is happening or what they are doing. Boot up Word > type email > send as e mail > Sent.
Some folks wouldn't know any better and they are at least trying to stay in touch.

Open Office for Windows & the Mac version of Open Office "NeoOffice/J" is all I need.
