| 323064 | 2005-02-09 20:38:00 | I'm running Widows XP Home and wonder where I can find the list of programmes that run when I turn on my computer. I want to restrict them and also prevent them from cluttering the task bar. | Cymbalz (4460) | ||

| 323069 | 2005-02-10 04:21:00 | Thanks all for your various responses. The two programmes I'm trying to prevent laoding at boot-up are the Excite and Yahoo Messenger programmes. I am sure I looked for the option to prevent this when installing them. I've checked all the Start-up directories and can't find any trace in them. John Boy, I ran your sysinfo.org/startuplist and nearly ran screaming from the room. There are so many items in there marked with either "N", "X" or "?" that are shown as having been placed on my drive by various worm, trogans and viruses that I was unaware I had ever been exposed to. The system runs well and is regularly checked by Nortons AV, Adaware, Ashampoo and Spysweeper. Am I safe to select and delete the offending files shown by the sysinfo programme? |

If yes use this Shoot The Messenger www.grc.com hth I think Cymbalz is talking about the IM programs rather than the popup messenger pest. Cymbalz, have you checked in the programs' Tools/Options for an option to disable running when Windows starts? A good program to stop things loading at bootup is HijackThis but you need to be VERY careful when using it otherwise your computer may not start. |
